Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 54

He took a few steps, then stopped, hesitating before he finally turned back toward the house. After a moment's indecision, he walked over to Cynthia's bedroom door and knocked.

"Cyndi, I have to leave for something urgent. I'll be back tomorrow—"

"Get lost!" Cynthia had barely drifted off to sleep before being jolted awake, irritation flaring in her chest.

Benedict froze, guilt written all over his face. Lowering his voice, he tried to sound as gentle as possible. "Cynthia, I really do have an emergency. I'll come back tomorrow and spend time with you. Try to get some rest."

Cynthia didn't respond.

He lingered at her door, frowning, uncertain.

Some instinct told him that if he left tonight, she might never forgive him.

"Cyndi—" he began quietly, but before he could finish, his phone started ringing.

He glanced down—it was his mother calling. He quickly answered, deliberately raising his voice.

"Mom—"

He barely got the word out before Cynthia yanked open the bedroom door, reached out, and snatched the phone from his hand. She pressed speakerphone.

"Benedict, where are you? Gis—"

He panicked for a split second, but recovered quickly. "Mom, just hang on. Let me explain to Cynthia and I'll be right there."

Lois, hearing Cynthia was beside him, bit back whatever she'd been about to say. The call timer ticked on in tense silence until she abruptly hung up.

Benedict took his phone back from Cynthia, meeting her gaze with earnest eyes. "Cynthia, there's been an emergency at home. I have to go."

"I'll come with you," Cynthia said flatly.

He froze, a flicker of anxiety passing through his eyes. "You…"

He couldn't come up with a good reason to say no.
