Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 59

Benedict slammed on the brakes so hard the car lurched forward.

Giselle was thrown against her seatbelt, her whole body jolting from the sudden stop. Her mind reeled, and the fruit she'd been holding scattered across the floor. Instinctively, her hands flew to shield her stomach.

In the back seat, Lois's eyes widened in alarm at the abrupt commotion.

"What happened?"

Benedict didn't answer. Jaw clenched, he reached for his phone, which he'd left on the center console.

Just moments earlier, while feeding Benedict some fruit, Giselle had caught a glimpse through the window—she thought she saw Cynthia sitting in a car with a man, but she hadn't been sure.

"Benedict, that person just now…"

His reaction gave her all the confirmation she needed.

"That was Cynthia, wasn't it?"

He said nothing, already dialing Cynthia's number, one hand yanking the wheel to make a sharp U-turn, tires screeching as he went after the other car.

Meanwhile, inside the other vehicle, Cynthia was still feeling queasy from what she'd just witnessed outside. She didn't want to look out the window again, so she turned her attention to Dominic, who was playing a game on his phone. Watching the man's clumsy moves, she couldn't help but let out a disapproving tsk.

Wearing headphones, Dominic must have heard her anyway. He looked up, their eyes meeting.

Cynthia's disdain was written all over her face before she could hide it.

"Think you could do better?" Dominic asked, his tone dry.

Cynthia smiled. "I wouldn't say I'm a pro."

She hesitated, not wanting to sound arrogant, but also refusing to be too modest. In a softer voice, she added, "But I'm probably a little better than you."

She couldn't help remembering the last time she'd bragged—and promptly lost the game with Dominic watching.

Dominic studied her, saying nothing.
