After a brief silence, Frank let out a quiet sigh and spoke.

"Mr. Shepard, let me take you to the hotel you usually stay at."

Benedict's tone was tinged with irritation. "I have a house. Why would I need a hotel?"

Frank fell silent.

He always insisted on staying at a hotel when he had a home, but now that he had nowhere to go, suddenly the hotel wasn't good enough.

The cold night air had hit Benedict hard when they stepped out of the restaurant; now, his head was spinning.

"Call Cyndi. Tell her to come pick me up and take me home."

Frank's expression was pure resignation.

Cynthia had stormed out just moments ago—there was no way she'd come back for him.

Still, Frank mulled it over and decided he had to at least try. He dialed her number.

Cynthia had just arrived at her apartment. She'd barely parked when Frank's name flashed on her phone.

"What is it?"

Her voice was cool, with nothing but annoyance at being disturbed. Concern for Benedict was nowhere to be found.

Frank always felt an uneasy guilt when speaking to Cynthia, especially after helping Benedict hide so much from her.

"Miss Tremaine… Mr. Shepard's drunk, and he doesn't have anywhere to go. He asked me to call you. Should I bring him over to you?"

He didn't dare suggest she come pick him up herself.

Cynthia let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Nowhere to go? Frank, do you even believe that?"

Frank hesitated, silent.

She continued, "I'm sure there's someone out there who'd be thrilled to look after him when he's drunk. Why don't you try that option instead? Take him over and see how it goes?"

Frank tensed. Was she testing him? He replied carefully, "Miss Tremaine, who do you mean? I'm not quite sure I understand."

Cynthia gave a soft, chilly laugh. "Frank, you've worked with me for years. You should know my temperament by now."

"If you don't get it, then maybe it's best you never do."
