Chapter 229: Chapter 229 Never Wrong in Their Own Eyes

Marcus’s POV

Time moves differently when you’re locked in the Alpha Council’s dungeons. Months feel like years when you’re confined to a cell all day, with just one pathetic hour of yard time every other day. The only thing keeping me sane are the monthly visits from my wife Selina. As annoying as she is, doing time without visitors is unbearable.

Her first visit was a nightmare. She came in raging about finding out I’d been sleeping with Linda. I had to work my charm overtime, feeding her the usual story about being weak and seduced. Eventually she bought it, like she always does. Our entire marriage has followed this pattern - she discovers my affairs, throws a fit, then forgives me after I promise it was meaningless.

"Your son misses you," she told me last time, her eyes watery and accusing.

"Don’t bring him here again," I snapped. "This place isn’t for kids. Come for conjugal visits instead."

A man has his needs.

The public defender assigned to my case showed up once and never returned. I need a real lawyer to get me out. I’ve been working on Selina, telling her to contact her cousin Caroline. That bitch married a powerful Alpha. She should be helping family now. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"Caroline won’t help," Selina whined. "She cut ties with our family completely." Useless woman. So I turned to the investigators instead.

I requested a meeting with the head guard, saying I wanted to cooperate with Investigator Magnus. He took his time showing up, but finally came. I told him I knew plenty about Howard’s operation, including his hideouts, but I’d only talk if Caroline came to see me. So now I’m waiting, not entirely sure she’ll come.

Caroline Bennett... always so hot with that perfect body, but such a damn goody-two-shoes. Being a scentless wolf made her worthless for mating, only good for a quick fuck.

If she had been a normal wolf, I might have actually chosen her over Selina. After all, pack traditions ran deep; no respectable wolf married a scentless mate.

I thought maybe I could marry Selina and keep Caroline as a mistress. But she got pregnant with no clue who the father was. I was furious! I still thought I might have a chance to get her into my bed.

The thing is, I’ve always known who fathered her kid. After doing some dirty work for Howard involving Alpha Draven’s parents’ car, a private investigator came snooping around Maplewood asking about a woman in a lavender dress with a silver-white mask from the masquerade ball. Howard quickly contacted me, paying me to derail the investigation.

I played along but had an interesting chat with the investigator, hinting that I could help. He revealed everything – he was looking for the woman who’d spent the night with Draven Thorne at the party. I immediately recognized it was Caroline. The kid had to be Thorne’s. I planned to take that secret to my grave, using it as leverage someday. But they somehow connected the dots. Two more investigators came to town afterward, and I purposely misled them.

When I discovered Caroline had left Blood Moon Pack and where she’d be working, I nearly lost it. There was a real chance she’d run into Draven and discover everything. I considered blackmailing her, but whenever she came back to town, she was always with that nosy Eleanor. Such a meddling bitch!

I spotted them entering the market once and followed them, approaching Caroline the moment Eleanor stepped away. I was ready to make my move, tell her I knew her kid’s father and name my price, but Eleanor returned and caused a scene. I kept tracking Caroline around town, and the next day I saw her with Draven. He told her he was the kid’s father right in front of me. My leverage vanished into thin air.

"Marcus! Over here," Guts called out as he walked across the yard. Guts runs the alcohol operation in this hellhole.

"What’s up?"

"Got fresh brew ready. Want in?" Guts ferments moonshine in his cell and sells it to inmates under the guards’ noses. I’ve been his loyal customer since day one. Selina sends me cigarettes, the prison currency, and I trade them since I don’t smoke. But I definitely drink.

"Looking out for me as always. Send a good batch to my cell. Same price as before?" Guts nodded, and I handed over the cigarettes.

"Inmate Marcus. Come here." A guard called from the entrance. I walked over slowly. "Into the restraint area. Head guard wants to see you."

"During yard time? What’s his problem?" I snapped. This bastard couldn’t wait an hour? Yard time is the only freedom we get in this place.
