"Since when were you allergic to pollen?" Theodore questioned Queenie in a deep voice the moment Isabella left.
Queenie was truly caught by surprise to learn that those flowers had been from Theodore.
"I'm sorry, Theodore. I just… Just—"
Theodore interrupted, "You just dislike Isabella, so you tried to make things difficult for her."
Queenie's eyes reddened the moment her intentions were exposed. She grasped tightly onto the hem of her patient gown as she choked out the words, "I didn't mean it… It irritated me to see her coming in with those flowers in her arms. Theodore, you never allowed any other woman to get so close to you previously. Yet, you even asked her to get flowers that were meant for me…"
The look on Theodore's face darkened even further. He walked to the side of Queenie's bed, staring at her with a gaze as cold as ice. "Queenie, let me remind you once again—Isabella is my wife. I came to visit you at the hospital as a friend because you're unwell. You shouldn't let your emotions out on her."
He paused, a tinge of weariness flashing across his eyes. "The past is the past. Isabella is part of my life now. If I'm still like family to you, you should respect her and yourself at the same time."
As Queenie studied Theodore's adamant stance, tears finally rolled down her cheeks. "Family? If you treat me like family, why can't you marry me?
"I refuse to believe that you haven't been able to tell how I feel about you after all these years. Why did you have to choose Isabella instead of me? Were you lying back when you said that you'd protect me forever?"
"I wasn't lying. I will protect you, but I will not marry you," Theodore replied.
From his tone of voice, it was clear that he was standing his ground. "My relationship with Isabella will not change because of anyone else. Don't do anything else that'll make things awkward for everyone moving forward. Otherwise, I won't come by again."
After saying that, he turned around and headed for the door without giving the sobbing Queenie another glance. Just as he got to the door, he bumped into Isabella, who had returned with two bottles of water in her hands.
She was even holding a packet of tissues. Clearly, she had heard the stir within the ward. Even so, she acted like nothing had happened. She simply looked up at him and asked, "Done catching up with her?"
Suddenly, Theodore's heart wrenched as he looked at the calmness in Isabella's eyes. He reached out to touch her shoulder, but she subtly avoided his touch.
