Amelia asked again, "Jessica, since you resigned from your summer job and returned the remaining sum to him, how did you pay for the tuition fees for your second year?"
Jessica sighed, "I was anxious too, at first. I thought of applying for a bursary from the counsellor. But when I submitted my application, I was told that someone had already paid for my fees.
The first person that came to my mind was my mother. But the counsellor told me that it was a tall, handsome guy who claimed himself as my relative that paid for me. I immediately thought of that guy. Without hesitation, I called him right away to verify my thought. It was him who paid for me!"
Amelia raised her eyebrow as she asked disdainfully, "All of a sudden, he was keen on doing charity. He wanted to be a low-profile hero, didn't he?"
"I had no idea what was on his mind either." Jessica shrugged dismissively before she continued, "To be frank, compared to the previous time when he offered me a card, I found this way of offering easier for me to accept. To some extent, I had to admit that I was moved. It was undeniable that I was in a financial crisis. Hence, I didn't turn him down. All I could promise him was that I would work harder and pay him back as soon as possible.
After a moment of silence, he acquiesced." "I guess he had been looking at you in a different light after you returned the money to him, which was why he stopped humiliating you with money." In that case, Amelia could not help but wonder if the guy had finally accepted Jessica as one of his friends.
Well, no one knows." Jessica leaned forward and took another sip of her drink which was not as cold anymore. She then said, "We stopped contacting for the next two months. Just as I thought this was our end, he came to find me again."
"What was he up to this time?"
"He looked awfully miserable. It was as if he was at his lowest point in life. I was working in a coffee shop when he contacted me. I didn't want my boss to think that I was loafing at my job, so I invited him inside and turned around to finish my job on hand. It was only when I got off work that I realised that he was still sitting in the coffee shop. I doubted if he took even a sip of the cup of coffee in front of him. I offered to take him to dinner but he dragged me to a pub instead.
I didn't drink at all that night whereas he got wasted. It was funny because I didn't even know what his name was, let alone his address. I couldn't find his identity card with him either. So, I had no other choice but to bring him to a motel where identity registration was not strictly required.
The living condition there was poor. I was worried about him, so I stayed for the night and took care of him. When he regained his sobered up, I updated him with what happened after he passed out. He fell into a moment of silence after he heard that. At last, he told me that his girlfriend ran away with another man with no expression on his face."
Amelia could not help but sneer, "I see! He was dumped."
Amelia was disgusted by men like him. They sought comfort from other women as soon as when they were rejected or dumped by their lovers. However, they never came to think how their selfishness was going to impact those women.
Jessica sighed, "I knew for a fact that it was another woman who got him into drinking heavily. But when I saw him in a mess like that, I couldn't help pitying him."
Amelia grunted, "This kind of person doesn't deserve any pounds of your pity!"
Jessica tried to explain by drawing an analogy, "How about this. Since you're so used to Patrick's bossiness and arrogance, all of a sudden, he gives you a pitiful with puppy-eyes. Won't you get softhearted for him?"
"Um..." Amelia lingered on Jessica's analogy only to find that she could not bring herself to agree with her. She shook her head, "That depends. If his misery is because of another woman, not only will I not getting soft- hearted, but I'll tell him to f*ck off!"
Jessica smiled wryly and muttered, "Fine. But you know me well to know that I can't resist kids and small animals. From the moment he showed up in front of me with that pitiful look, I couldn't bring myself to ignore him.
I wanted to help him out but I wasn't sure what I could do to cheer him up. Hence, I could only serve him a cup of coffee every time when he came to the coffee shop to look for me. After I got off from my work, I would then accompany him to the pub.
It was as if this was an unspoken understanding between us. He would accompany me during my work while I would stay with him in the pub after work. At last, I would send him to the hotel where he stayed before I called it a day off. We maintained this routine for some time before Christmas rolled around the corner again. Since the holidays were about to begin, I told him that it was time for me to go home.
For as long as I knew him, he had always been a reticent person. However, upon hearing me, I didn't expect him to ask me to stay and accompany him. According to him, he had no one."
Amelia frown. There were two conflicting voices in Amelia's head. On one hand, she sincerely hoped that there was a good ending for the story between Jessica and that mysterious guy. Meanwhile, she also knew that it was impossible. Otherwise, Jessica would not have been single at this moment.
Her instinct told her that the story was going to end badly. At this moment, she doubted if she could bring herself to listen to another possible tragedy. However, there was no way for her to interrupt Jessica from sharing her story.
Jessica hummed, "I got soft- hearted again and agreed into accompanying him for Christmas."
Christmas was one of the most celebrated festivals, yet Jessica chose not to go back home and stayed in the city where she barely knew anyone upon the guy's request. Amelia would not be fooled into believing that it was merely an act of kindness or sympathy.
It was as if Jessica could read her thoughts. She glanced at Amelia before she sighed, " Amelia, I told you that since the first time I saw him, I kind of fantasized him. Otherwise, I wouldn't have acquiesced to him taking away my first time.
Amelia was outrageous at Jessica's incompetent thinking. However, she was also aware that though those things Jessica listed meant nothing to her, it was an important treasure that Jessica cherished the most. After all, Jessica was an inexperienced young adult who came from poverty.
Jessica continued, "When I couldn't hold back my temptation to call him and did so again, I noticed that he had been drinking. Usually, people tend to open up after drinking. However, he was the opposite. He became even more reticent when he drank. There were a couple of times when I attempted to get him into telling me his name when he was drinking. However, I never succeeded under his silence.
Ha! I knew that he must be missing his exgirlfriend. But all I could think was why was he thinking about her she had run away with another man. I honestly thought he deserved so much better. Certainly, I couldn't tell that to him on the call. Hence, I had no other choice but to end the call awkwardly.
After the two calls, I told myself that it was time for me to move on and forget about him. I knew that I meant nothing to him when he seemed to be my everything."
Amelia exclaimed enthusiastically, "I agree!"
Jessica looked up and heaved a long drawl before she said, "Unfortunately, the truth is that reality never works in favour of me. Every time, when I was on the verge of giving up, my hope would be lit up again...
Well, he came to find me again! He looked far worse than the last time I saw him back on Christmas. He was despaired and wretched.
Initially, I swore that I was going to cut ties with him. But as soon as he showed up, I couldn't bring myself to think straight!
I changed my mind and asked him how he was doing lately. He told me expressionlessly that his ex-girlfriend was getting married to another man. He was all alone and solitary.
It was only then I realized that he had not given up on that woman when they first broke up, but I assumed he did. Even after his ex-girlfriend had chosen to be with another man, he was waiting for her to come back to him all this while.
It wasn't until the news of her marriage broke out that he had no other choice but to accept that they could no longer get back together. All of a sudden, I was grateful that I didn't confess my feelings to him earlier. Otherwise, I could foresee that he was going to ask me to get lost!"
Amelia said with some frustration, "Supposedly, he should be the one to get lost! Let me guess, he went missing again once he finished pouring his feelings out to you, didn't he?"
To Amelia's surprise, Jessica shook her head before she answered, "He informed me before leaving. Not only that, he gave me a bracelet as an apology for his disappearance on the last occasion."
