"Yes." Brittany did not deny the thought that she wanted to replace Amelia.
Kaleb went on to say, "In this period, I've carefully considered it. Although you're inexperienced, you're young and rich, which is much better than those sick old men at the board of directors."
Brittany was puzzled. Was Kaleb trying to help her?
Kaleb could not help but laugh when he saw Brittany staring at him in such disbelief. "My dear niece, why are you looking at me like that?"
"Uncle Kaleb, what are you trying to say? I'm dense, so please speak frankly." Brittany hoped she was not overthinking.
Kaleb pointed at her and laughed. "If you're dense, then why will I support you to be the acting director?"
Brittany's eyes widened with shock in an instant. "Uncle... Uncle Kaleb, did I hear you correctly?"
Kaleb patted the back of Brittany's hand, then said with a smile, "You didn't mishear me. I said I'll support you to become the acting director. Did you hear me clearly this time?"
Brittany asked in awe, "But... why?" "What do you mean 'why'? You're George's daughter, and you own shares of Apex Construction Corporation. If you don't take over as the acting director, who else can do it?" Kaleb responded matter-of-factly.
Brittany replied automatically, "But... there's you too..."
"Me?" Kaleb seemed to have heard a joke and chuckled for a moment. He then continued, "No, no, no. I'm old and I want to enjoy my remaining years with leisure. So, how can I take on the responsibility?"
Brittany stared at him for a long while before questioning, "Uncle Kaleb, are you serious?"
Kaleb answered with a straight face, "Of course, I've been thinking about it since you put forward the idea to me previously."
"But..." This sudden turn of events made Brittany panic.
Seeing this, Kaleb suddenly stopped smiling and asked, "Brittany, don't tell me that you only told me that you wanted to be the acting director for jokes?"
"Of course not!" Brittany refuted hastily, "I do want to be the acting director! Uncle Kaleb, if you help me take over the position, I'll listen to whatever you say at the company. I... I'll be at your command!"
Kaleb waved his hand. "I can't do that. Being the acting director basically means you're the acting president. Nobody can command you other than your father."
"Uncle Kaleb..."
Seeing that Brittany's eyes were slightly reddening, Kaleb became even more amiable and went on, "All right, don't thank me just yet. You've passed my test, but the rest of the directors haven't agreed. You have a tough battle to fight."
Brittany's expression turned grim. "Uncle Kaleb, what should I do?"
Kaleb then analyzed the situation of the various parties on the board of directors. "Don't you worry, I have a lot of people on my side. As long as I give out the word, I'm sure they won't refuse."
Brittany asked worriedly, "But I don't know any of them. Will they help me?"
Kaleb replied sincerely, "Silly child, they're with me, and you're my niece. They're doing themselves a favour by helping you."
Kaleb's words made sense.
Kaleb continued, "However, just in case, you should meet them with me in private. It's better to get familiar with them."
"Um..." Brittany was a little uncertain. She knew that they were a bunch of sophisticates, and she was just a plain talker. Could she persuade them?
Kaleb glanced at her strangely. "Brittany, is there something you want to tell me? It doesn't matter. Just say it. I'll try to solve it for you."
Brittany pursed her lips, then said, "Uncle Kaleb, you told me that you have 25 people on your side. I don't think I can deal with so many people in one go. If I accidentally dismiss one of them, it'll be bad. What do you think?"
"Well, your concerns are reasonable." After a pause, Kaleb continued, "I remember that I have a few old buddies who you've met before, and they're the closest to me. Why don't we invite them first?"
"Okay." Brittany agreed without hesitation.
"All right. I'll make arrangements as soon as possible. I'll notify you when the time comes," Kaleb said as he stood up. "There's nothing else now. Go on with your business, Brittany. I'll leave."
"Uncle Kaleb!" Brittany got up and said with a flicker of light dancing in her eyes, "I'll never forget your kindness."
Kaleb simply smiled and said, "Silly child." Then, he left.
The moment the door closed, the smile on
Brittany's face vanished, for she could no longer predict Kaleb!
She had not even done anything yet.
Could it be that Kaleb had discovered her deal with Yancie?
However, with Kaleb's impatient temper, once he found out about it, he would fly into a rage and threaten her to hand over the item instead of saying he wanted to support her.
"No, I need to call Yancie and ask her." Brittany thought with worry.
As a result, when she dialled the number, she only received a machine-automated reply, "The number you've dialled is not available at the moment."
Did Yancie block her? Or did she change her phone number?
That was possible. Yancie had blackmailed Kaleb for 4 million USD and also took 400,000 USD from her. With that amount, it was inevitable for her to not feel guilty.
me?"
Amelia was stunned. "What did you just say?"
Patrick rolled over and pressed his body against hers, his strong chest right on top of hers. "Amy, let's not evade it anymore, okay?"
Amelia looked at him with a complex expression. "Mr. Hopper..."
Patrick kindly continued, "Promise me that you'll remarry me when we go back?"
Amelia felt as if she was out of breath. "Mr. Hopper, do you want to hear the truth?"
Patrick nodded. "Go ahead."
Amelia replied bitterly, "If you want to remarry me, you have to be mentally prepared. Once the news that I was adopted leaks, people will jeer at you and the Hopper family..."
Patrick retorted fearlessly, "I don't care! As for how gramps, Owen, Nora, Andrew, Ashley, and Florence feel about this, they hope we can remarry more than anyone else. Do you think they're afraid of being mocked?"
Amelia lowered her gaze slightly. "Mr. Hopper, you should still think it over."
Patrick was terrified of her distant look. He hugged her tightly and assured her, "Amy, don't worry. No matter what happens, I'll stay with you
until I die."
The corners of Amelia's eyes glistened with tears.
Patrick wiped the tears with his finger and said lovingly, "Amy, tell me, can you bear to let our child be fatherless?"
This undoubtedly touched the softest part of Amelia's heart. She denied eagerly, "No, I didn't mean that!"
"So you want me to have a love affair with you like an unrestrained man?" Patrick had even humiliated himself to agitate her.
Amelia got furious and said, "Don't say that!"
Patrick seized the opportunity and added, "Then remarry me and let me be your lawful husband!"
Amelia fell silent for a long time. "You'll do whatever you want no matter what I say, don't you?"
Patrick hesitated for a second. Even though he knew that it might draw her displeasure, he still chose to follow his heart. "That's right."
