Rachel had wanted to see Cecilia one more time before she left, but Cecilia had fallen asleep.

Rachel could tell that Cecilia was exhausted. She looked lower in spirit and weaker than before.

Rachel noticed it but didn’t say it out, for fear that Cecilia might feel bad about it.

Both of them cared about their image and were strongheaded, unwilling to let others see their ugly sides.

Sometimes, she wondered about the outcome of the treatment. Going through the torment would be fine if it allowed Cecilia to be well, but she feared that Cecilia wouldn’t end up well and it would render all the pain and suffering she went through pointless.

Rachel held her tears all the way to the entrance of the hospital, where she finally broke down.

Her nose turned red as she turned to ask Tyler, Do you think Cecilia will

Tyler knew from Rachel’s redrimmed eyes that she was getting emotional. He pulled her into his embrace and said in a low, comforting voice, It’ll be fine. Take heart. We’ve already done as much as we can. Cecilia is considered blessed compared to others.

His words were hard to swallow, but not far from the truth.

If Cecilia didn’t have you as a friend, her savings wouldn’t last her through her first treatment term, not to mention posttreatment psychological support. Your father was critically ill, and you know better than anyone else how high the medical fees are.

Money made the world go round indeed.

Yes, you’re right. I should be more optimistic.

Rachel thought what Tyler said wasn’t wrong. Compared to ordinary folks, they had it easy.

Tyler rubbed the back of Rachel’s neck. Alright, let’s head back.

Okay.

On their way back, Rachel received a call from Hannah. She didn’t dare to answer it in front of Tyler which might only make him feel more burdened.

She looked out the window and said to Tyler, I need something at the supermarket.

Tyler stopped the car by the roadside. Why don’t I go down with you?

Rachel unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the door.

No need. I’ll be back very soon.

Alright.

Rachel walked into the supermarket and answered the call.

Hello, Hannah.

Hannah urged, You only have two days left to transfer two hundred million dollars back to the company, or you’ll be sued. Don’t blame me for not reminding you.

Rachel’s throat constricted as she looked at the wide array of goods arranged neatly on the shelves. She felt suffocated as she said, Got it. I’ll transfer the money in two days.

Don’t give me empty promises. I want to see the money!Hannah scoffed. If you fail to raise the funds, you know the consequences. The guarantee agreement your father signed is still with me. You won’t be able to run if I bring this case to the courts!

The beeping tone after Hannah hung up pierced Rachel’s eardrums. She took a deep breath and grabbed a bottle of mineral water from the shelves as she wandered listlessly out of the supermarket.

As she sat back in the car, she held the cool bottle of water in her hands, her fingers rubbing the bottle anxiously. She didn’t dare look at Tyler and even buckled her seat belt in the wrong buckle.

Tyler glanced at her, sensing something wrong with her despite her best efforts to hide it. He didn’t ask, but deliberately slowed down the car as he drove.

Rachel stared out the window throughout the journey.

Tyler steered the wheel with one hand and said with feigned carelessness, Wanda prepared your favorite dish today.
