Chapter 560
Evelyn still couldn’t wrap her head around it.
Standing under the veranda, she watched the rain trickle down in thin, silver lines, her expression complicated. “I’ve heard a few things, and it seems Mr. Warbrooke is involved as well. Jayson, don’t you think you owe me an explanation?”
She just couldn’t make sense of it.
Cedric had been brought in at Jayson’s request, through Emerich, all for Nancy’s sake. Under normal circumstances, her situation wouldn’t have turned out so bad.
But in the end, why did Nancy’s downfall get linked to Cedric?
Worse, Cedric had technically been introduced to Nancy through the Cavell family. If Nancy got dragged down, and Cedric himself admitted to being involved, it wouldn’t be long before people started digging into the Cavells as well. That kind of scandal was the last thing Evelyn wanted.
“If I’d actually accepted Nancy back then, this whole mess would have splashed onto the Cavells too. What were you thinking?”
Setting aside all the gossip swirling around about Ariel these past few days, what lingered was irritation.
If she had chosen the wrong person back then, she would have been dragged straight into this mess.
Jayson flicked his gaze toward her, then out into the night without saying anything.
Evelyn’s face hardened. “You never should’ve dragged the Cavells into helping Nancy. Whether she succeeded or failed should’ve been her own problem. But now that you tied us to her, how do you expect outsiders to see me? If anyone uncovers the Cavells pulling strings, how are we supposed to keep our reputation intact?”
That finally got a reaction. Jayson lowered his gaze and slid his thumb across his phone. “Isn’t this exactly what you wanted?”
Evelyn froze. She stared at him in disbelief.
He looked down at her. “You wanted the perfect daughter–in–law. You approved whoever seemed most promising. So shouldn’t the risks be shared too? Benefits don’t come without a price.”
Evelyn stared at his cold expression in shock. “You…”
Jayson didn’t give her another word. He turned and went back inside.
For a long moment, Evelyn stood there, shaken. She felt as if something had struck her out of nowhere.
Jayson was only speaking the truth, but he said it in the harshest way possible.

If she hadn’t hesitated back then, the one sitting at the bottom of this pit right now would have been her.
Her expression darkened.
Then, the phone in her hand buzzed. It was someone confirming Ariel’s identity.
Evelyn had sent people to investigate because she couldn’t believe it at first. But now…
“Mrs. Larkin, it’s true. Ms. Walker’s identity has been verified.”
That was when Evelyn’s face paled.
Ariel had hidden this all these years. When the truth finally came out, it felt like a slap across the face. Evelyn felt that all the times she had dismissed Ariel back then now felt painfully pathetic.
Ariel had only sat for a while when she saw Renee walk in.
Renee’s eyes widened the moment she saw Ariel. There was shock and something awkward in her expression. In the end, she walked over. “You’re quite the schemer, aren’t you? Keeping it from us all this
time.”
She still hadn’t let go of the grudge from when Ariel blocked her and changed her number. No matter what Ariel’s status was now, Renee couldn’t get past that.
Ariel finally looked at her. Her gaze was cool.
