"So you're saying Ari might still be there?" Her breathing grew heavy, and her eyes reddened with panic.

Her calf wound, injured during the hurried escape, started bleeding again from her anxiety. But she ignored the pain and kept asking the same question over and over.

"I'm sorry. We can't confirm anything right now."

That answer shattered whatever calm she had left. Tears blurred her vision.

Unlike Ariel, she couldn't stay calm in the face of serious danger. She dared not let her mind wander toward the worst.

Just then, a group of people hurried in from outside.

Janice spotted Wade, who was leading the group, almost immediately. Like seeing a savior, she hobbled toward him. "Wade, where did you just come from? Do you know what's going on near the base?"
