Chapter 88
Calista had been starving, but after just a few bites, she couldn’t eat anymore.
“I can’t finish it… but thank you so much.”
Aside from Anthony, Alexander had been the kindest to her. Gratitude welled up inside her, and her expression noticeably softened.
“There’s only a little left. Finish it, okay?” Alexander’s tone was gentle, almost like he was coaxing a child.
A strange emotion stirred in Calista’s chest.
In the end, she pushed past the discomfort in her stomach and finished the bowl of soup.
Alexander glanced at the empty bowl, an amused yet helpless smile tugging at his lips.
“You should rest here. I’m going to do my rounds. If you need anything at all, just press the bell.”
With that, Alexander exited the room with his usual graceful ease.
“Okay.”
Calista was just about to close the door when someone she hadn’t seen in a long time suddenly appeared in the doorway.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, staring at Clarice.
After months apart, the woman before her looked entirely different.
The simplicity and softness that once defined Clarice were gone, replaced by a captivating allure that verged on seduction.
Clarice smiled without a word, her grin carrying an eerie, unsettling edge.
She strolled into the ward, taking in every corner of the room with a gaze that held a strange flicker of envy.
“How much does this room cost per month?”
Her tone was perfectly serious, but every word cut like glass.
“Don’t push it,” Calista snapped, her temper flaring. But before she could say more, she broke into a fit of coughs.
Clarice only mocked her more in response.
“Oh dear, getting upset already? You’ve done all sorts of dirty deeds. I’m sure you can handle a few words from me. Take a breath, darling, or you’ll cough up a lung.”
As Clarice spoke, she pulled out her phone.
On the screen was a high–definition, close–up photo. It showed her and Alexander in the same room, captured from an angle that made them look intimately close.
Calista’s frown deepened. If that picture got out, it would stir up a scandal of epic proportions.
She didn’t care about her own reputation. But what about Alexander? He’d be the one to take the fall.
