Chapter 206: The Challenge

Hailee’s POV

Montana’s gaze didn’t waver. It was steady, burning with a kind of hate that only comes from jealousy. I forced myself to look away before she could see the unease on my face.

"Hailee," Callum’s voice pulled me back. He gestured toward the main area near the fire circle. "Come on."

He led me toward the front, where a long wooden table had been set up for the pack leaders and guests. Callum placed his hand gently at the small of my back, guiding me to sit beside him. His touch was calm and comforting. I could feel the curious stares of the crowd as I took my seat next to their Alpha—a place they clearly believed didn’t belong to me.

Callum rose to his feet, his presence commanding immediate silence.

"My people," he began, his deep voice carrying easily over the crowd, "tonight we celebrate the Lunar Festival—the night our ancestors danced under the first full moon to honor the bond that ties us as one."

Cheers erupted from the pack, the tension melting into excitement. Torches flared brighter, drums beat louder, and the scent of roasted meat and burning wood filled the air.

Callum continued, smiling faintly. "Tonight, we eat, we dance, and we compete—not as rivals, but as family."

He lifted his hand toward the large bonfire in the center. "Let the festival begin!"

The crowd roared in joy. Music burst through the air again, and the night came alive with cheers and laughter.

The boys were the first to jump up, their eyes shining. "Can we go, Mom?" Oliver asked, barely able to stay still.

"Go," I said, smiling. "Have fun."

The first event was the youth sword challenge—a friendly match where the younger wolves sparred with wooden swords.

Oliver’s hand shot up immediately. "I want to join!"

I turned to him, my brows raised. "Are you sure?"

He nodded, determination glowing in his eyes. "I’ll win."

Callum chuckled, resting an arm on his knee. "That’s the spirit. Go show them what you’ve got."

The matches started one after another, with the boys of the pack laughing and showing off. But when Oliver stepped into the ring, the crowd quieted a little. He was smaller than most of the others, but there was something about the way he stood — focused, ready — that made everyone take notice.

The match began, and I couldn’t help but hold my breath. Oliver moved fast, blocking, ducking, striking — his form surprisingly sharp. The crowd started cheering louder as he held his ground, and when he landed the final blow, his opponent’s wooden sword went flying out of his hands.

He had won.

The crowd erupted in applause, and I couldn’t stop the proud smile that spread across my face. "That’s my boy," I whispered under my breath. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Callum stood too, clapping, pride written all over his face. He bent slightly toward me, grinning. "He’s got skill," he said warmly. "Like a true Alpha’s son."

The words made my heart squeeze, but I smiled anyway. Oliver ran up to us, breathless and glowing with excitement.

"I did it!" he said, grinning from ear to ear.

Callum ruffled his hair affectionately. "You did. And as promised, you’ll get your reward tomorrow."

"What reward?" Oliver asked, eyes wide.

Callum winked. "A surprise."

Oliver laughed and ran back to his brothers, bragging already.

I turned to Callum. "You made him really happy."
