Ditching Me for His 'Soulmate'? His Loss. Next Stop: My New Life novel Chapter 79

Chapter 2

That afternoon, without hesitation, I made my way directly to Human Resources and handed over my resignation letter.

The HR manager looked up from her desk, surprise clearly written across her face.

“Mia… are you absolutely certain about this?” she asked, her voice tinged with disbelief.

“You’ve been working with Lucas longer than anyone else here,” she added, shaking her head slightly. “We always joked that even if the whole firm collapsed, you’d be the last one standing.”

“So what’s changed all of a sudden?” she pressed, trailing off as she caught the steely resolve in my eyes.

Until just yesterday, I would have agreed with her.

This company was something Lucas and I had built together from the ground up.

We had spent countless sleepless nights side by side, pouring everything we had into it, celebrating every small victory as if it were a triumph of our own souls.

I still vividly recall our very first case—when we finally got paid, Lucas took me out for an extravagant dinner, using the fee we earned.

That night, we sat high above the city on the 54th floor, the skyline stretching endlessly before us, the lights blurring into shimmering streaks of gold.

He pulled me close, his voice low and sincere as he whispered, “Thank God it’s you by my side.”

I forced a faint smile, though my heart was heavy.

“People grow apart,” I said quietly. “I’ve made my decision.”

The HR manager sighed deeply, regret flickering in her eyes. “Well… if this is what you want, then I truly wish you the best.”

I nodded softly in thanks and left the office, my footsteps echoing down the quiet hallway.

No sooner had I settled back at my desk than my phone buzzed with a notification.

It was from Emma.

A photo of Lucas, peacefully asleep in bed, appeared on my screen.

The caption read: “Someone had a little too much to drink last night… lucky for him, I was there to take care of him.”

As if that wasn’t enough, she added, “And as a little reward, I left him a souvenir.”

To ensure I wouldn’t miss it, she tagged me in the post.

This wasn’t the first time she’d done something like this.

Out of every ten posts she shared, at least three were thinly veiled digs aimed directly at me.

Emma was striding confidently into Lucas’s office, the sharp click of her heels echoing with every step, her hips swaying deliberately.

Within moments, the office blinds were drawn, cutting off any view from the outside world.

I lowered my gaze, memories flooding back unbidden.

Back then, Lucas had pressed me against his office desk, his eyes flashing with a dangerous excitement.

“Don’t you think this feels a little like an affair? It’s kind of thrilling, isn’t it?” he had said with a crooked grin.

His sweat had dampened my skin as he held me close, whispering promises into my ear.

“When the wedding happens, I’ll make our relationship public,” he had vowed.

I chuckled bitterly to myself, realizing how naïve I had been—how often I had fallen for his sweet words.

How foolish I’d been to let him betray me thirty-two times.

But now, with the divorce papers and my resignation letter tucked safely in my bag,

there would be no thirty-third time.
