The woman was crying so hard she could barely speak. “It’s under the middle row of cabinets. Mrs. Sullivan... she’s really down there. I swear, I’m not lying.” She truly wasn’t. The threat hanging over her was way too terrifying. She couldn’t even imagine dying like that. The cold was starting to seep into her bones, making her whole body ache. Suddenly, she was desperate to take it all back. She’d thought she could maybe slip away in the chaos, but now all she wanted was for someone to show up and end this nightmare. If no one came soon, she was certain she’d freeze to death out here.
Drake finally found the entrance to the basement. He was about to go down when a group of people rushed in through the courtyard gate. They took one look at the scene and started shouting. “Who are you? What are you doing here?” Their voices rose in panic. “Someone, help! The warehouse is being robbed! There are thieves in the warehouse!”
There were a lot of valuable things in that warehouse, so security was top-notch. As soon as Wiona and her group had stepped inside, the motion sensors had triggered the alarm, which explained how quickly these people showed up.
Then they noticed the woman on the ground. She was almost completely naked, and the shock on their faces turned to horror. “Amaya? What happened to you?” So that was her real name, not Annette. Seeing people she recognized, Amaya hugged herself, her face burning with shame and anger. Tears and snot were freezing on her face as she begged, “Help me... please, help me... they’re trying to kill me...”
That was all the newcomers needed to hear. In a heartbeat, they decided Wiona and her group were criminals. They charged forward, fists ready. “You’re dead! How dare you cause trouble at the Simpson estate!” “Grab them!” “Someone call security! Get everyone over here now!”
Nikolai stepped in front of Wiona. “Ma’am, Mr. Sullivan should be here soon. Please, go inside and hide. Let me handle this.” He didn’t wait for her answer. He kicked Amaya aside and then faced off with the Simpson security guards, his fists clenched and ready for a fight.
Wiona didn’t want to slow him down. She hurried to the shelter of the covered walkway. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Amaya cough up more blood onto the ground. Suddenly, a wave of dizziness and nausea hit Wiona. She pressed a hand to her chest, her thoughts racing. Was the incense starting to take over? She’d only taken the detox pills, worried about her babies and too scared to use the real antidote. The pills had kept her mostly clear-headed, but now her head was spinning and she felt sick. It was like a fire was burning inside her.
