Luke was in the kitchen cooking when the sound of the front door unlocking echoed through the apartment.
"Mommy! I'm home!" Daph called out as she burst in.
Selene was at the dining table sketching designs, her laptop and iPad spread out before her. She was swamped with work and had offered to help Luke with dinner, but he had insisted she focus on her projects.
Selene turned her head and saw Adrian Shaw trailing behind Daph. He was carrying her backpack and was already taking off his shoes in the entryway.
Just as Luke emerged from the kitchen with a steaming platter of stir-fried pork, he saw Adrian's easy smile and felt an internal alarm bell go off.
"What are you doing here? You dropped Daph off. You can leave now."
Adrian tilted his head, feigning innocence. "I'm here to join the family. Aren't you happy to see me, brother-in-law?"
A dark aura of resentment began to emanate from Luke.
From behind him, Selene's voice cut in. "Let Mr. Shaw stay for dinner." She stood up and addressed Adrian. "Thank you for bringing Daph home."
"No trouble at all. A simple task I'm more than happy to perform," Adrian replied smoothly, shrugging off his suit jacket and hanging it on the coat rack.
Luke set the platter down on the table. Watching Adrian make himself at home, he felt a muscle in his left temple begin to twitch uncontrollably. Adrian walked to the table, poured himself a glass of water from the pitcher, and glanced at Selene's laptop screen.
"How's the project coming along?" he asked.
Adrian leaned down, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper meant only for her. "Well… want to?"
Selene’s fingers trembled, hitting the wrong key on her keyboard. The blush spread from her ears down her neck. She subconsciously licked her dry lips, noticing that even the air she exhaled felt hot.
A platter of glazed chicken wings, still sizzling, was placed forcefully on the table between them. Luke glared at Adrian, looking as if he were seconds away from shoving him headfirst into a deep fryer.
"I didn't make enough for you, Mr. Shaw," Luke said, his intention to get rid of him perfectly clear.
Adrian just grinned at him, his eyes as sly as a fox's. "That's all right. I'm the one intruding. I ordered some McDonald's before I came into the complex. You guys go ahead and eat. I'll just stand by the door and have a burger."
