"I ate something much worse than garlic."
"What was it?" Daph asked, her curiosity piqued.
Just then, Selene slid open the kitchen's glass door, and Adrian emerged carrying a steaming bowl of noodles. He sat down next to Luke, while Selene joined Daph on the other side of the table.
"Selene made me noodles. Take a whiff," Adrian said, holding the bowl under Luke's nose for a split second before pulling it away. "I'm sure you've had Selene's cooking before, brother-in-law. You're probably tired of it. But for me, getting to eat something she made herself is a rare treat."
Daph, overhearing him, chimed in. "You can never get tired of Mommy's cooking!"
"Your uncle has lived with your mommy longer than you have," Adrian pointed out.
Luke glanced at the bowl of noodles and let out a cold laugh. "There's no egg in that bowl. That means it was made for a guest. When Selene cooks for family, it doesn't look like that."
Daph's eyes widened in realization. "That's right! Mommy always adds an egg when she makes noodles for me."
Adrian took a bite of his noodles and then looked at Selene. "So, when are you going to make me family?"
Luke had thought his comment would sting Adrian, but it was Selene who nearly choked on her food. "Luke made scrambled eggs with tomatoes," she explained quickly. "I didn't think you needed an extra egg."
"Mmm," Adrian mumbled through a mouthful of noodles. "The news that she's carrying Harrison's child is probably all over the Capital's inner circle by now. Felicity even told her friends how it happened. Apparently, a couple of years ago, the Vaughns were pushing for a third child and wanted you to have another one for the family."
Adrian's voice trailed off.
Selene remained calm, continuing to eat. "Go on."
"Harrison mentioned it to some people, and Felicity suggested he freeze some sperm so you could just do IVF."
Selene instantly guessed what Adrian was leaving out. "And Harrison said something along the lines of not wanting to touch me, that he wasn't interested in me, right?" If he hadn't, Felicity would have had no reason to suggest artificial insemination.
