“Ms. Tati, it might be safer for you not to know.”
“Nothing could be worse than the situation right now.”

The bodyguard lowered his voice. “The boss moved into the maritime shipping industry two years ago and bought a fleet of ships. Six months ago, one of those ships disappeared with its cargo, vanishing in international waters. Two days ago, that ship reappeared in port.”
Tatiana was smart. Connecting it to the arrest warrant, she blurted out, “And there was something on the ship that shouldn’t have been?”
The bodyguard nodded, his expression grim. “The cargo hold was filled with 108 bodies.”
She sucked in a sharp breath.
“Worse, the bodies were stuffed with illegal contraband. A huge amount, all from an unknown source. As the ship’s owner, the boss was targeted. The first few times it was just ‘talks. Today, the arrest warrant was issued.”
“It’s a set–up.”
It was so blatant, she could see it instantly.
The Jackson family was powerful, a century–old enterprise. They weren’t hurting for money. She couldn’t believe Jasper, of all people, would be involved in this kind of business.
“Yes.”
“Then why don’t they keep investigating?”
“On paper, all the evidence points to the boss.”
She fell silent, her hands clenched, her brow furrowed with a worry she wasn’t even aware of.
“Ms. Tati, this has nothing to do with you. Please rest assured, the boss will get you and Ms. Ann back home safely.”
She didn’t answer. Her mind was elsewhere.
That night, she made a phone call.
“It’s me.”
The loud music on the other end stopped. “What’s up?”
“I need your help with something.”
“Trouble? Bullshit! Just spit it out!”
“I’ve run into a little problem in Las Vista.”
“What? What are you doing there? Vacation? Wait, I’ll come find you right now! I’m actually here on vacation

myself!”
She thought about it. Face to face was probably better.

She arranged to meet at a nearby bar. It was too late to Bring Ann, so she left her with the bodyguards and went alone.
The bodyguards wouldn’t allow it and insisted on following. She didn’t argue.
A flashy silver sports car pulled up to the bar. Owen jumped out, ignoring the envious stares, and pushed his way inside. He spotted Tatiana in a corner, and his face it up.
“Tati!”
“Owen.”
A rare, relaxed expression crossed Tatiana’s face, and a small smile touched her lips.
Owen plopped into the seat opposite her. He was still in a loose–fitting suit, looking like he’d just escaped a party. His young, handsome face wore its usual roguish grin.
“Didn’t wait too long, did you?”
Tatiana shook her head. “Was I interrupting?”
“Come on. I can find a party any day, but I don’t get to see you! Why didn’t you tell me you were here? This is practically my home turf!”
“Things happened. I didn’t have time.”
“So, what is it?” Owen casually picked up the juice on the table and took a sip.
“How does someone get out of a smuggling charge?”
“Pfft!”
He sprayed a mouthful of juice everywhere.
Owen scrambled for napkins, his expression priceless. “What did you smuggle?”
“Not me. Um, a… friend.”
She glossed over it and quickly explained the situation.
Owen’s playful grin vanished. He got serious. “Are you talking about the case that just broke? Smuggling, drugs, human organ trafficking… ship 101?”
Her heart sank. “You know about it?”
“It’s hard not to. Tati, you stay out of this, you hear me? Not even my mom could get someone out of this.”
She looked down, her grip on her glass tightening.
“Listen to me. Don’t get involved. I don’t care who this friend‘ is, stay away!”
“Right. I get it. Thanks.”

Owen could tell she hadn’t given up. He sighed, annoyed. “What’s this guy to you? Your husband? Boyfriend? I’ve never seen you this worked up about anyone.”
“No, it’s not like that. Don’t get the wrong idea.”
