POV: Killian
I looked across the dinner table at my parents, at their expectant, loving faces, and felt a familiar sense of helpless exasperation. Their intentions were good, born from a genuine concern for me and for the future of our family. But their methods were, as always, spectacularly unsubtle.
"It's not that I am unwilling," I began, choosing my words with care. "It's that the woman I would choose is… unique. Her circumstances require a delicate touch. You know what she endured with Damian Blackwood. Her trust in Alphas, in the very idea of a mating bond, is shattered. She has built a fortress around her heart, and for good reason."
I tried to explain the slow, fragile process of earning her trust. "For three years, I have been her partner. Her ally. Her shield. That is all she has been able to accept. To pressure her, to force the issue of a mating, would undo everything. It would prove her deepest fears correct—that all Alphas are just like him, seeking only to possess and control. All I can do is wait."
My father sighed, the sound of a practical man forced to contend with impractical emotions. "Waiting is not a strategy, son. It's a gamble."
But my mother simply smiled, a knowing, clever light dancing in her eyes. "Oh, my darling boy," she said, her voice full of a fond, teasing warmth. "You have your father's strength, but you have always lacked a certain… flair for the dramatic."
She leaned forward, her expression turning conspiratorial. "Your 'waiting' is very noble. It is the shield of love, as I've always said. But a shield alone cannot win a heart. A shield protects, but it does not invite. You are waiting for the queen to emerge from her castle, but you have done nothing to convince her that the world outside is safe and desirable."
