"But…"
Christian wanted to say something, but in the end, he held his tongue.
[But you and Tyler aren't officially divorced. Right now, they're spending your joint assets.]—That's what Christian wanted to say.
But he was afraid to hurt her feelings.
Still, Emilia understood perfectly well what he meant.
She smiled softly and turned to him. "Tyler and I have a prenup. There's a lot I can't take with me."
Seeing Christian's furrowed brow, she added, "That's how it works in most big families, right? The Donovan family's no different."
"As for all these rumors online, Christian, I'm not ready for people to know who I really am."
Christian finally nodded.
He understood.
He just felt she deserved so much better.
Emilia glanced at him, sensing his realization, then looked back out the car window.
Christian studied her profile for a long moment.
If only he were strong enough—if he could shove those two brothers out and take over the Donovan Group, if he actually had a voice in front of his grandfather—maybe Emilia wouldn't have to be the one to clean up this mess.
His fists tightened in frustration, then he dropped his gaze.
Night pressed in around them, the car gliding through drifting willow fluff as it sped toward the hospital.
Meanwhile, in the back of a long black Bentley, the Glenn family's three members sat together.
Ella rolled her eyes. "You never stop talking, do you? My ears are about to fall off."
"Miss Glenn!" George whined, even more aggrieved.
Among the Glenns, people usually called the men Mr. Theodore Glenn or Mr. George, but in all of Alden City, there was only one Miss Glenn—Ella.
"That's right, I hit you," Ella said with a sigh. "I know you can't stand Vivienne. Honestly, neither can I. But you have to look past the surface."
She turned to their older brother, sitting silently beside them. "Vivienne is a master at self-promotion, but behind her is an A-list PR team. She's not pulling this off alone."
George still looked baffled, like a big, clueless golden retriever.
Ella shook her head, exasperated, and explained, "Look—every statement Vivienne makes sounds gracious. She's polite to Emilia, she never puts Serena down. But in the end, all the online chatter is endless criticism of Emilia and Serena."
"Some of that is her clever wording, sure, but there's definitely a whole team working the narrative behind the scenes."
