Tyler was at a loss.
Lately, so many things were slipping through his fingers. No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn't make sense of it all.
Everything felt out of control.
Sitting alone on the edge of what had once been their marriage bed, Tyler pulled out his phone and dialed Jensen's number.
"Check with the housekeeper at Hillside Manor," he said, voice flat. "Find out when Emilia last came home."
Jensen didn't ask questions. He simply got it done.
A few minutes later, Jensen sent a message—
*Mr. Erickson, it's a bit complicated. I'll have the housekeeper speak with you directly.*
Almost immediately, Tyler's phone rang.
He answered.
"Hello, Mr. Erickson? This is the housekeeper at Hillside Manor." The woman's voice was polite, a little nervous.
Tyler didn't waste time. "You're the one who keeps the place clean, right? When did Mrs. Erickson move out?"
There was a pause as the housekeeper thought. "I can't say the exact date, sir, but it's been about twenty days."
Twenty days.
That would have been right around the week they'd gone to city hall for the divorce paperwork.
Tyler pressed for a few more details, then ended the call.
He lay back on their wide, empty bed, staring up at the stark white ceiling.
Twenty days.
Had it really been that long since they'd sat across from one another in city hall, signing away their marriage?
In just a few more days, their divorce would be final.
Divorce.
Did Emilia truly want this? Did she really want to end it?
Tyler turned the question over and over in his mind.
That sweet, soft little girl—Emilia couldn't help but pull her into another hug before finally letting her go, watching as Bella, backpack bouncing, disappeared into the classroom.
The night before, Emilia had gone to see Sophia for a checkup. Sophia had said she was getting better.
Emilia felt it too.
Since Bella had come into her life, things had started to heal. The past seemed lighter, the future a little brighter.
If she just kept moving forward, she believed she could leave the pain behind for good.
With that thought, Emilia turned and headed to Henry's office. There was still work to be done today. And the Voice of the Divine semifinals were coming up—she needed to prepare for those, too.
The day slipped by in a blur of busy tasks.
Tyler woke to find it was already noon.
He checked his phone. Aside from a few routine messages, there was nothing from Emilia.
He'd called her more times than he could count. Sent message after message.
But it was as if he were shouting into a void—no reply, no sign of her at all.
