Emilia yanked her hand free.
"Tyler, I told you—I'm here today for Bella's checkup. She needs surgery," she said coldly.
But Tyler refused to let her pass, blocking her path with stubborn resolve.
Bella was still watching them from across the room.
A headache throbbed at Emilia's temple.
"I'll be at Chloe's wine tasting in a few days. If you have questions, ask me then—I'll explain everything."
She stared into his dark eyes. "Tyler, don't give me a reason to hate you."
With that, Emilia stepped around him, heading to where Bella and Felix waited in the corner.
Tyler opened his mouth, as if to say something more, but her words echoed in his mind, drowning out anything else he might have said.
He turned to watch her walk away, Bella's small hand tucked in hers, his mood sinking into something he couldn't name.
When did things between them get this bad?
Emilia felt his gaze even as she walked away.
Whether it was the way Bella kept glancing back or the sensation of Tyler's eyes on her like pins and needles, she couldn't escape the reminder of his presence.
But so be it.
It wouldn't be much longer.
Once the divorce papers were signed, they'd have nothing left to do with each other.
Felix stood beside the mother and daughter, his own feelings tangled.
He'd seen the rumors about her and Christian.
He knew Emilia had never given Christian any reason to hope, never once acted in a way that could be misunderstood.
But as a man, Felix could guess what Christian was thinking.
If he was honest…he was a little jealous.
"What is it?" Emilia parked and turned to her, giving her full attention.
"Miss Emilia…" Bella's voice was soft. "Who was that strange man today? He… seemed to know you."
For a moment, Emilia didn't respond, just met Bella's wide, questioning gaze.
Outside, the wind rushed past, rustling the trees. Under the amber glow of the streetlights, people strolled by, their laughter floating through the air and making everything feel oddly distant.
Emilia debated whether or not to tell Bella the truth.
But Bella would be living with her soon, and she'd hear about these things anyway. Tyler might even show up again.
Bella wasn't like other kids—she was a bit more mature, able to understand things most children wouldn't.
So Emilia squeezed Bella's hand. "Bella, he's my husband."
Seeing the confusion in Bella's eyes, she added, "But in nine days, it'll be over. We'll be completely separated, so you don't need to worry about him."
She gently ruffled Bella's hair. "Sometimes in life, we meet the wrong people. He was my mistake. But I'm fixing it now. He doesn't matter. From now on, we're going to be just fine."
