Chloe was sobbing, but even as tears streamed down her face, she kept glancing over at Tyler, searching for a trace of warmth.
All she found was the cold indifference in his eyes.
"Chloe, if you're looking for experience, you're welcome to work at any of the top investment firms here in the States," Tyler said, his voice icy.
"That department always belonged to the Dennis family."
"You have a problem with her, and you're doing this on purpose."
He delivered each line with a measured chill, every word a slap.
Chloe said nothing, glaring at Tyler with defiant, wounded fury.
Tyler had no interest in arguing. He'd finally understood what that Spanish bullfighting piece really meant, and the look Emilia had given him before she left—frigid, distant. Emilia had always cared deeply about the Dennis family. No wonder she was furious when Chloe pulled a stunt like that.
And then, to make matters worse, Vivienne had shown up...
Still, Tyler couldn't justify Emilia throwing wine at Chloe in front of everyone.
"Stop playing games. And one more thing," Tyler added, turning to leave, "you should show her some respect and call her your sister-in-law."
With that, Tyler walked away, leaving Chloe standing alone.
"Ugh!" Chloe screamed, sweeping every bottle, brush, and tube off her vanity with a violent crash.
Tyler walked briskly back to his car. He saw Vivienne waiting for him by the curb, looking anxious.
"Tyler," she called, hurrying over. "Let me explain things to Emilia. We were only together because of that situation with Eugene—"
Tyler looked at her, exasperated. "How are you going to explain? She has no idea what happened back then."
"I didn't want things to turn out like that, Tyler, I swear I didn't..." Vivienne's voice broke as she started to cry.
Her sobs were raw and desperate.
"I know," Tyler said gently, letting out a long sigh. "Tonight was just a coincidence, Vivienne. I'll handle it."
—
The thought made her smile, laughter slipping out before she could stop it.
On the other end, Christian seemed relieved to hear her laugh.
"Not much longer now," he said, his voice softer. "Just a few more days, and you'll finally be free of him."
Emilia stared calmly at the road ahead.
"Yeah," she replied firmly.
They chatted a little longer before Emilia hung up.
Her car kept gliding through the city streets, weaving through the nighttime silence. She still didn't know where she was going, or what she was looking for.
Christian's call had lifted her spirits—if only a little.
It had been over twenty days since Tyler first asked for a divorce. Once, Emilia's life plan had been crystal clear: build the Erickson Group alongside Tyler, help the Dennis family thrive, and uncover the truth behind her father's death.
Now, it all felt uncertain, slipping further away with every mile.
