Farewell to Love: The CEO's Desperate Chase novel Chapter 223

Alexander shot Christian a sharp look.

“I almost thought you’d finally grown a brain, but clearly, I was wrong.”

He studied Christian’s indignant expression, then continued, “I think I understand now—she’s sentimental.”

Something seemed to click for Alexander as he added, “She’s been working with Tyler for years, hasn’t she? Maybe loyalty is the reason.”

He shook his head, almost wistful. “It’s a shame, really…”

“What’s so bad about that?” Christian protested. “Isn’t it a good thing?”

Alexander just looked at Christian, eyes steady, and said nothing.

After a moment, Alexander changed the subject. “You know, I’ve realized you do have one redeeming quality: you’re honest.”

Translation—he thinks I’m an idiot, Christian thought. Say whatever’s on your mind, that’s his style. Probably because of that infamous temper—he could never keep anything in.

But lately, Christian had started to pick up a few tricks of his own. Maybe he wasn’t quite as naïve as before.

Alexander stood up, voice brusque. “Tomorrow morning at seven sharp, all the investors’ representatives will be here. Let’s see how you handle it.” With that, he headed off to bed.

“Wait, Grandpa! Does this mean I passed or not?” Christian called after him.

Alexander didn’t even bother to reply.

If he hadn’t passed, would he still be able to mouth off like this? Christian wondered.

Emilia woke up at just the right time.

Lack of sleep left her groggy, operating on autopilot as she dragged herself to the bathroom.

She washed up, got dressed, pulled herself together, then grabbed a coffee and headed out to drive Bella to school.

While waiting at a red light, Emilia glanced at her phone.

Christian called her immediately.

She put on her headset. “Christian, what happened?” she asked, puzzled.

Did the investors reject the reason they’d prepared? Did he have to pull some other trick to force things through? What could he possibly have done?

Christian’s answer was rushed: “It’s too much to explain now. The investors are still here—I have to smooth things over. Let’s meet at the office later, okay?”

He hung up almost as quickly as he’d called, leaving Emilia completely in the dark.

The light turned green. Emilia started the car, telling herself not to overthink it and just focus on getting Bella to preschool.

She switched on the radio to clear her mind. The host’s cheerful voice filled the car, “Good morning, listeners. Today is…”

Emilia glanced at the dashboard calendar.

Today was day twenty-eight of the divorce cooling-off period.
