Emilia wanted to force herself to blurt out a quick “No, of course not,” just to gloss over everything, to let him marry her tomorrow without any more questions.
But when she thought of the child she’d lost, the tanzanite ring he’d taken from her, the love she’d once given so freely—and how carelessly it had all been cast aside—her throat closed up. She couldn’t do it.
How could she possibly say she didn’t blame him?
Her emotions surged so violently she could hardly keep herself together.
“Emily.” Tyler said her name again, his voice low but insistent. “Answer me.”
His eyes were rimmed with red. “Do you blame me?”
Emilia took a deep breath and finally turned to face him, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
He looked almost unchanged from the man she’d known—the same familiar face, the same eyes, except now there was something in them. Maybe guilt, maybe regret.
“Emily…”
Her hands dug into her palms as she fought to keep her composure, forcing her voice steady. “What do you think?”
Just three words, but they landed like a punch.
Tyler opened his mouth, trying to respond, but nothing came out. He stared at her, at the tears in her eyes, then looked away.
He dropped his gaze, unable to meet her look any longer.
“I know you blame me,” he said quietly.
Outside the car, the wind whipped the trees, the rustle loud in the silence between them.
“I know you’ve been angry,” Tyler went on, voice thick with emotion. He stared out the window, watching the trees sway.
“I know you probably should be angry with me.”
“Vivienne hurt you. What happened with her—it hurt you.”
He paused, then added, “But Emily, I had my reasons.”
Emilia studied his profile, listening to the same words he’d always used. He always had his reasons. He was always forced by circumstance.
But what about her?
“You said you’d always stand by me, and you did.”
“But I haven’t kept my promise to you yet.”
Tyler spoke quietly. “But I will. I’ll be there for you. I promised.”
“Emily.” He said her name once more.
She didn’t answer.
Emilia just stared out the window, afraid to let him see her face.
Once upon a time…
Once, things really had been good.
Those years of working together, struggling through every hardship as a team—they had survived so much, back to back, depending on each other.
She’d thought that, after all those nights and days, even if he hadn’t loved her at first, surely by now he would. Surely they’d see it through—together, to the end.
