But she didn’t even know what it was about her that he liked.
“If you want another reason,” Theodore Glenn smiled and said, “just consider it me not wanting to watch Tyler and the Erickson Group have it too easy.”
“Emilia, you know something?”
He paused, his expression softening. “I’m jealous of him.”
“Not because he owns the Erickson Group, or because of anything he’s achieved in business.”
“I’m jealous because he has someone he can truly trust, someone willing to risk everything for him—a lover who’d run through fire for his sake.”
Emilia lowered her gaze.
A lover willing to risk everything for someone else?
Wasn’t that just foolish?
She thought of the last seven years of her life—what had it all amounted to, really?
“I’ll think about it,” she said quietly. “I can’t give you an answer right now.”
She was exhausted.
Seven years had worn her down to the bone.
It was hard to imagine starting something new anytime soon.
Sometimes she even doubted whether she was still capable of falling in love at all.
And if she wasn’t, could she really enter another marriage without love?
“Excuse me,” Emilia murmured, bowing her head slightly. Then she stood up and walked away, leaving Theodore Glenn sitting alone.
He watched the untouched cup of tea she’d left behind and smiled, serene.
He understood how she felt.
If she truly couldn’t love someone else, then maybe he could simply love her instead.
…
Back in her car after leaving the café, Emilia let out a long sigh of relief.
At least Theodore hadn’t come to make trouble for her—she could deal with everything else later.
Besides, she was finally divorced. That should be something to celebrate.
…
“Who knows? But if Emilia were still around, she’d never let him show up like this.”
“Yeah, true—”
“What are you all talking about?” Secretary Jensen interrupted sharply, cutting them off. “Don’t gossip about Mr. Erickson.”
The employees quickly apologized and scattered.
What they didn’t see was Tyler, standing just out of sight, pressing his lips together in a thin line.
After a moment, he turned away in silence.
He kept himself busy all morning.
Having spent a sleepless night, he was running on fumes.
As he leaned back in his chair, eyes closed for a brief moment of rest, the office door suddenly opened and someone approached.
“Tyler.” A voice broke through his exhaustion.
He opened his eyes to see Vivienne, smiling down at him.
“Let’s go get our marriage certificate,” she said.
