Emilia glanced over at Christian. “You told me before—Tyler was trying to pay us off to keep quiet, right?”
Christian nodded. “Yeah, he brought it up, but I turned him down.”
Emilia considered this, standing up as she recalled Tyler’s typical way of handling things. “It’ll be soon,” she said. “If Tyler really wants Vivienne to win, he’ll come back to you.”
“When he does, don’t turn him down right away. Tell him you need time to think.”
Her voice was calm and steady.
“What if they drop it?” Christian looked puzzled. “Guys like that—if a project turns risky, they usually just move on to something else. Tyler’s smart; he gets it. And with his resources, starting another project for Vivienne would be a piece of cake.”
“So there’s a good chance they’ll just walk away from this one.”
Emilia met his eyes, her gaze dark and unwavering. “He’ll come back,” she said.
—
Elsewhere, Tyler had already picked up Vivienne. They were heading to a restaurant together, the silence in the car stretching long and thin.
Vivienne looked even more fragile than she had that morning. The city blurred past the windows as Tyler drove.
Finally, he broke the silence. “Was it you who leaked the story about the deal?”
Vivienne turned to him, looking utterly shocked—her face pale, but her eyes rimmed with red. “Tyler, do you really have to accuse me like this?” she whispered weakly. “After Secretary Jensen stormed into my office today, I’ve barely been able to hold myself together. I’ve been resting ever since.”
Tyler just stared at her. Only those in the office that day knew about the deal, and only they had seen the original contract. Now that it was all over the internet, the list of suspects was short.
But Tyler only looked at her, calm and resolute. “There’s an issue with the credits,” he said, each word measured. “Before, maybe we could’ve worked something out behind the scenes. Not anymore.”
He remembered the way Christian had looked at Serena. He’d seen it clearly—admiration, something more. That look was one of the reasons Tyler had doubted Serena’s real identity for so long, only to dismiss his suspicions again and again.
But Vivienne refused to back down.
Vivi’s Whispers mattered to her—more than anyone knew. No one realized she was faking her illness. She knew full well that the elder Ericksons didn’t approve of her, and now Tyler’s loyalty was wavering, too.
Her only chance was to crush Emilia, to prove she was better at everything. Only then could she hold her place in the family when her “miraculous recovery” came.
Emilia had always just been there because of the Ericksons—taking care of Tyler, not much else. The only thing she’d ever really shined at was this latest project as Serena, her musical talent.
So Vivienne was determined: she’d use Vivi’s Whispers to outshine Emilia in both music and drama, once and for all.
