Estelle smiled faintly. “How could they?”
Bennett, looking awkward, adopted a deferential tone. “Mr. Lamont, you’ve misunderstood. We would never bully our own daughter.”
“Daughter?” Jonathan’s gaze, sharp as ice, swept over the couple. “Isn’t your daughter washing dishes in a restaurant?”
Bennett’s face fell, and he said nothing.
Jonathan led Estelle to a nearby sofa and sat down, his voice calm but firm. “Bennett, I believe I told you to come to me if you needed something, not to bother Ella.”
“I… I just heard Estelle was getting married and came to congratulate her,” Bennett stammered, intimidated.
“It didn’t sound like congratulations,” Jonathan retorted with a cynical edge. “It sounded more like emotional blackmail.”
Bennett forced a smile. “Mr. Lamont, my wife and I just want Estelle’s wedding to be as perfect as possible.”
“Are you implying the wedding I’ve planned for Ella isn’t perfect?” Jonathan shot back.
Bennett choked on his words, not daring to reply.
“You two needn’t worry about Estelle not having family on her side,” Jonathan continued. “The family she has is far more reliable than her so-called biological parents.”
Simone, stung by his words, couldn’t hold back her resentment despite her fallen status. “Mr. Lamont is right,” she said with a sneer. “Estelle has the Jarvis family behind her. Even when the Macclain family was at its peak, we could never compare to them.”
He reached out and gently brushed her hair back, his sharp eyes soft and tender. “What do you think? Do you want them at our wedding?” Bennett’s last words about a mother-daughter bond had struck a chord with him. He knew that, once upon a time, his Ella had longed for a mother’s love.
Estelle understood his thoughts. She took his hand, her eyes clear as crystal. “Having you makes up for everything.”
Jonathan’s heart trembled. He pulled her into his arms. “I will be your everything. I will never let you down.”
She hugged him back. The day had been a happy one, and she didn’t want to let them ruin it. She patted his back. “Let’s go back.”
He took her hand and stood up. “Back to the cake. I had them save a whole layer for you that no one’s touched.”
Estelle smiled. “Can I have a little wine?” she whispered.
