"I didn’t!"
Serena turned her head, glaring at Ethan.
This was one of the rare times she lost her temper with Ethan.
"I’m sorry..."
She and Ethan apologized almost at the same time.
The atmosphere in the car became heavy again, and Serena took a deep breath, explaining Caleb Lockwood’s current situation to Ethan.
"Caleb Lockwood seems to be in a psychogenic coma, and it’s likely caused by me... I could wash my hands of Caleb Lockwood’s life or death, but I can’t stand by and watch Grandpa worry about this."
"Can you really leave Caleb Lockwood to his fate?"
Ethan’s cold questioning made Serena shiver involuntarily.
"Caleb Lockwood’s grandpa... is just your excuse."
"No..."
Serena shook her head vigorously.
"If you were in Caleb Lockwood’s situation, I would also visit you every day."
Serena stared intently at Ethan.
She thought her example was persuasive enough.
The white Lexus slowly pulled over to the roadside.
After a long silence, Ethan’s voice finally echoed in the car again.
"But I’m not like Caleb Lockwood; I’ve never hurt you."
Ethan spoke firmly, his gaze on Serena was straightforward.
Serena lowered her head, biting her lower lip.
"I know... You are too responsible, so you can’t leave Caleb Lockwood alone."
Ethan’s attitude suddenly softened, reaching out to gently touch Serena’s hair.
"But have you thought about it? What if Caleb Lockwood never wakes up?"
"Today, the Lockwood family requests you to visit Caleb Lockwood every day. Tomorrow, they will do anything to force you to remarry Caleb Lockwood..."
"If remarriage is the only way to wake Caleb Lockwood, would you compromise?"
Ethan’s continuous questioning plunged the car into silence once more.
He clenched his back teeth, staring straight at Serena’s face.
He desperately hoped for a clear answer from Serena.
Yet...
Serena remained silent.
Ethan knew full well he wasn’t in a position to press Serena like this.
But he couldn’t help himself.
He was extremely jealous of Caleb Lockwood.
Not having to do anything, just lying in bed, could make Serena busy for him and worry about him.
Sometimes Ethan felt that the heavens were truly unfair.
He too had been a bedridden vegetative, but back then the heavens didn’t bring Serena to his side.
The white Lexus finally started moving again.
This time, Ethan changed the subject, transitioning rather abruptly.
"Actually... I came to the Lockwood family’s old mansion deliberately to pick you up because I have something important to ask your help with."
Seeing Ethan speak hesitantly, Serena tilted her head in curiosity. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
"But I might have just upset you, so I guess you won’t agree."
Seeing Ethan grabbing the back of his head with his other hand while steering the wheel, Serena couldn’t help but laugh.
"When did I say I was mad at you?"
"You weren’t mad?"
Ethan turned, looking at Serena in surprise.
"Watch the front, watch the front, it’s a red light!"
With Serena’s reminder, Ethan braked suddenly.
"Almost lost six points, you better thank me!"
Seeing Serena’s triumphant smile, Ethan felt relieved and smiled knowingly.
Finally, the atmosphere inside the car improved.
The signal turned green, Ethan continued driving, feeling much more relaxed.
"By the way, what was that you wanted to ask me to help with?"
Serena took the initiative to ask.
"Hmm... It’s a social engagement."
This time, the car’s atmosphere wasn’t heavy but awkward.
While driving, Ethan glanced at Serena with the corner of his eye.
"Don’t worry. I’ve told my parents... You’re not my girlfriend right now."
"Mmm..."
Ethan’s reassurance didn’t really relax Serena.
She trusted Ethan’s character.
After all, they’ve known each other for years, and spent their high school years as inseparable friends.
She believed Ethan wouldn’t say things that aren’t true.
But...
Knowing she’s not Ethan’s girlfriend, yet his parents still requested her presence at dinner —
What does this imply?
Isn’t this the same as introducing a girlfriend to parents?
Even now, Serena still remembered the moment Ethan’s mother slapped her.
Though so many years have passed, she still harbors resentment towards Ethan’s mother.
Serena turned her head, looking out the window.
Outside, the nightscape was dazzling.
She wondered how tonight’s dinner would turn out.
Her chest filled with anxiety.
The Lockwood family’s old mansion.
Caleb Lockwood was still unconscious.
But compared to the previous days, tonight he kept muttering in his sleep.
Lance Lockwood, the doctor, the caregiver, Mrs. Warren all heard it.
They were unsure if Caleb Lockwood’s change was good or bad.
Caleb Lockwood said a lot.
Most of it was incoherent, hard to understand.
But one word kept repeating clearly —
"Wife..."
