Flora’s Guide to a Second Chance at Love and Life novel Chapter 1913

Jane took the money, but it felt hot in her hand—like something she was never meant to hold.

“Jane, I just want to help you grow,” Mrs. Kidd said smoothly. “The whole Kidd family will be yours one day. There’s no harm in starting your training early.”

Honestly, if Fiona could have clapped, she would’ve. Mrs. Kidd always knew how to make even the most twisted logic sound perfectly reasonable.

Jane’s eyes were rimmed red. By accepting the five million, she knew she was letting Carson’s screw-up slide—letting him off with nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

“I’ll take the five million,” Jane said quietly, “but since you’re the one holding all the strings in the Kidd family, I’m pretty sure you can handle the upcoming orders without my cash.”

Mrs. Kidd narrowed her eyes, staring Jane down. “Jane, what are you really trying to say?”

Jane didn’t answer. She slipped the bank card into her pocket, not bothering to check it. She already knew there was no password—this was Mrs. Kidd’s special card, and she never bothered with stuff like that.

Mrs. Kidd was starting to get anxious. She’d seen how much Jane had grown lately—how hard she worked for the Kidd family. But Carson was still her darling, her favorite, the apple of her eye.

Her plan was simple: let Jane run the family business for now, then, when the time was right, send Carson into Kidd Group to “learn the ropes.” Eventually, Jane would let go, and Carson would take over as CEO.

It was a neat plan—if only Carson hadn’t dug himself into this mess. If not for his screw-up, Jane would’ve been left completely in the dark.

“Get the money back from Golden Glow? Are you out of your mind?” Jane snapped. “The fact Carson got out of there alive is already a miracle. Maybe you should ask around about who you’re dealing with. And for the love of God, stop telling people you’re part of the Kidd family.”

She glared at her stepmother, then turned away, refusing to say another word.

Her stepmother swallowed hard. Honestly, she had no clue what any of this meant—she was used to spending her days having afternoon tea with rich friends, shopping, getting facials, and attending parties. Business was never her problem.

“Jane, even if we can’t get the money back, we still have the five million from your grandmother. Isn’t that enough to cover the loss? No matter what, Carson is your brother—your real brother, even if you two have different mothers.”

That was it. Jane was beyond words. She turned her head away, lips pressed tight, and refused to say anything else.
