This is a disaster. Completely screwed.
Jane’s stepmother dropped to the floor like her legs had given out, her face drained of hope. Jane didn’t even blink—she had the staff tie up her stepmother and Carson and toss them both into the storage room. If Mrs. Kidd cared so much about Carson, she could deal with him herself.
Whatever bond Jane had with Mrs. Kidd was long gone. Just thinking about all those years spent trying to win her approval made Jane’s stomach turn.
All that effort for nothing. She’d been so blind.
“Jane, you can’t do this to me! Carson might not be your real brother, but I’m still your father’s wife!” her stepmother shrieked.
Jane rolled her eyes. That voice was like nails on a chalkboard.
“Stuff something in their mouths. I’m done listening to this,” Jane snapped, her patience gone.
The staff wasn’t exactly gentle, and Carson’s hand started bleeding again, the wound reopening.
Mrs. Kidd got so worked up she fainted and had to be carried off to her room. But Fiona didn’t leave just yet.
She shot Jane a look. “So, what now?”
Jane paused, then finally said, “Maybe I shouldn’t just walk away. I’m the only one left in the Kidd family who can take over. Carson’s useless, Grandma’s old. If I want real power, I have to take it. I want to be in charge of the Kidd family.”
Fiona smiled, nodding. “That’s what I was hoping to hear.”
With Jane’s mess sorted, Fiona didn’t stick around. She left the Kidd estate, only to get a message from Tyler—news about Anna.
Anna was dead. Overdose. Sleeping pills at the hospital.
Fiona’s mood soured. She thought about what they’d said to Anna last night. So Anna had already made up her mind—she’d just pretended otherwise.
At least now she could rest.
Exhausted, Fiona drove home to her villa. She yawned, ready for a shower and maybe a nap.
So Fiona went back to the living room and waited, trying to act patient. It had been ages since she’d seen her brother. He hadn’t even let her know he was coming so she could pick him up from the airport.
She scrolled through the news on her phone. Just an hour ago, the Woods family had held a press conference naming Jackson as the new head of the family.
Fiona got sucked in watching the livestream. She’d been at the Kidd estate when it happened—no wonder she missed it. Jackson really pulled it off.
Jackson finally came out of the bathroom and found Fiona glued to her phone. He walked over, ruffled her hair, and said softly, “Fiona.”
She spun around, her eyes huge, and launched herself at him, hugging him tight.
“Jackson, it’s been forever,” she mumbled into his shirt.
Like a koala, she clung to him as he carried her to the dining room.
“Have you been eating right? You feel lighter,” he said, half-joking but with that big-brother concern in his eyes.
