“So what you’re telling me is, either your people missed the fact that she already went back to the States, or she left for Country M with Esther?”
Bentley’s expression was grim, worry etched deep in his face.
“Ms. Fiona, this is on the Gregory family. We didn’t do a proper job investigating. You were treated unfairly during the competition, and we should be the ones to apologize. If we’d realized sooner she wasn’t really our daughter, maybe none of this would have happened.”
“You’re right. The Gregory family can’t dodge responsibility for this.”
Bentley’s face turned bright red. He started to say something, but nothing came out.
Fiona really wasn’t afraid to say what she thought.
He’d only made a passing comment, but Fiona didn’t hesitate to throw all the blame his way.
Still, no matter how annoyed he was, Bentley kept his cool.
“You’re right, Ms. Fiona. I’ve already sent people to track her down. Once we find her, you can do whatever you want with her. We won’t interfere.”
“Good.” Fiona’s lips curled into a small, knowing smile as she looked at the old fox across from her. She’d been waiting for him to say exactly that.
Amy’s parents felt a chill run down their spines under Fiona’s gaze. They exchanged nervous glances, goosebumps rising on their arms.
They just couldn’t figure it out—how could someone as young as Fiona have such a commanding presence? She didn’t lose out at all to someone as crafty as Bentley. It was honestly a little unnerving.
“Let’s have some tea,” Lucy chimed in, quickly pasting on a bright smile and stifling a yawn. “Ms. Fiona, we’re still dying to know—how did you figure out she was a fake?”
Amy’s parents both breathed a huge sigh of relief. Thank goodness Fiona didn’t know everything—otherwise, there’d be no way to explain themselves.
Especially Lucy. She was nowhere near as good at hiding her feelings as Bentley, and the panic was all over her face.
“So that’s what happened. No wonder we never noticed anything wrong, even after all these years.”
Bentley hung his head in shame. Suddenly, as if a thought struck him, he looked up at Fiona. “Ms. Fiona, did you just say she worked with Josie? What do you mean?”
“She’s been working for people from Country M. Didn’t you know that, Mr. Gregory?” Fiona shot the question right back at him, her tone just a bit too casual.
Bentley broke out in a cold sweat. He swallowed hard, not daring to guess how much Fiona really knew.
