Maggie lowered her gaze slightly and said calmly, “Saturday is my mother’s birthday.”

Johnny’s voice caught in his throat.

The fact that her mother had been kept in a convalescent home all these years was entirely thanks to the actions of the Green and Brown families. No wonder Maggie’s expression had shifted the way it did when facing Janice and

Julia.

After a long pause, he asked, “Do you have any plans regarding the Green and Brown families?”

Maggie clenched her fists. “I don’t want them to have it easy. But-”

But they were now under the protection of Franklin. Even though Cole was doing quite well, it would still be incredibly difficult to move against them.

Even if she didn’t say it outright, Johnny understood.

He offered her comfort, “What goes around comes around. I believe you’ll get your chance. Don’t lose heart.”

Maggie nodded. “Mm.”

On Saturday, after baking a cake together with Jason and the others, Maggie drove to the convalescent home.

She hadn’t visited in a while, and Sally looked even more frail than before.

The director explained, “Over the years, Sally has been deeply repressed, with little appetite. That kind of prolonged condition has seriously damaged her health. Her immune system is almost entirely compromised.”

“Then–then-”

“We’ll need to do further tests to confirm, but at her current state, if things continue to worsen, I’m afraid-

She didn’t finish, but everyone understood what she meant.

She didn’t have much time left.

Old Madam Miller staggered and nearly collapsed.

After leaving the facility and returning home, she locked herself in her room, utterly devastated.

But no matter how heavy their hearts were, life still had to go on.

It was getting late, and though no one had much appetite, they still needed to eat.

Maggie took her phone and drove to the nearby supermarket to buy groceries.

She wandered the aisles in a daze and went to the checkout with a few items. Just as she was about to leave, a voice called out, “Cousin.”

Maggie turned around. It was Jane.

She gave her a polite nod.

Jane smiled upon seeing her but paused when she noticed Maggie’s pale complexion. “Maggie… are you okay?”

Maggie shook her head, not wanting to explain.
