“Mom!”
My voice erupted through the kitchen like a wounded animal’s cry as I flung open the back door, the hinges protesting loudly against my force. Each breath I took felt like shards of glass scraping my throat, a painful reminder of the tears I had shed. “Mom! Where are you? Mommy!”
Each step I took felt like a battle against my own body. My legs trembled beneath me, the skin on my thighs raw and stinging, a burning sensation that was both foreign and agonizing. The ache between my legs was a visceral reminder of a horror I couldn’t fully comprehend. My chest heaved, desperate for air that felt just out of reach, while my eyes burned, swollen and bloodshot from the relentless stream of tears that had flowed for what felt like an eternity.
“Mom! Dad!” My voice cracked under the weight of my desperation as I stumbled deeper into the house, clutching the counter for support, afraid that if I let go, I would collapse entirely. “Where is everybody?!”
“Shhh! Savannah, keep your voice down.”
The unexpected sound startled me, causing my heart to pound violently against my ribs like a trapped bird.
It was Alyssa.
Her brows knitted together, lips pressed into a thin line of concern. “Why are you screaming like that? What happened?”
Relief washed over me like a tidal wave, so overwhelming that I felt as though I might collapse into her arms. “Where’s Mom? I need her—I need to see her now.”
Alyssa raised a finger to silence me, her eyes darting nervously toward the hallway, a clear indication that my panic was unwelcome. She wasn’t even looking directly at me. “She’s in a meeting with Dad. Important people. Wealthy people. If you keep yelling, Dad will flip. You know how he is.”
