From Best Friend To Fiancé (Savannah and Roman) novel Chapter 219

**Dreams Folding Into Broken Time**
**Chapter 132: At My Place**

The eviction notice crinkled ominously in my grip as I stared at it once more, the harsh reality of its implications hitting me like a wave.

Shock wasn’t the feeling that coursed through me—not really. Instead, it was a slow, sinking realization that this miserable day had managed to deliver one final, cutting blow.

Without even stepping inside my apartment, I pivoted sharply on my heel and marched straight down to the landlord’s flat below.

If this old bat thinks he can just wake up one day and decide to toss me out like yesterday’s trash, he’s got another thing coming.

I pounded my fists against his door with a sense of urgency. “Mr. Gremlin! It’s Savannah!” My knuckles rapped against the wood relentlessly, refusing to relent.

Pressing my ear against the door, I could hear some muffled sounds on the other side. It was almost as if he was shuffling around, possibly trying to gather the energy to face me.

“Which Savannah?” he called out, his voice dripping with annoyance.

I rolled my eyes, tapping my foot against the floor in irritation. “Savannah Hart! Your tenant!” My voice was sharper than intended, but I couldn’t help it.

“I’m coming,” he grumbled, the sound of his footsteps approaching the door.

When Mr. Gremlin finally cracked the door open halfway, I was met with the sight of his disheveled appearance. His gray hair stood on end, as if he had just rolled out of bed, and he wore that same stained undershirt along with those worn-out brown slippers.

“Mr. Gremlin,” I said, my tone flat and devoid of any warmth. “What’s this supposed to mean?” I held the eviction notice up as if it were a weapon, ready to strike.

He squinted at the paper, then shrugged nonchalantly. “An eviction notice, obviously.” His gaze met mine with a condescending look. “Can’t read, Savannah? Thought you graduated college?”

“I can read, thanks,” I replied, exhaling a shaky breath. “What I’m asking is why this is happening. I’ve paid my rent up until next month.”

He scratched his neck, avoiding my gaze as if it were a venomous snake. “Yeah, well… the building’s getting sold. New owner wants it cleared by tomorrow. Nothing personal.”

“Nothing personal?” My jaw clenched tightly, anger bubbling beneath the surface. “You couldn’t have given me a little more than twenty-four hours’ notice?”

He shrugged again, his indifference palpable. “It’s outta my hands, sweetheart. The paperwork’s already filed. You can talk to the new management if you want, but trust me, they won’t care either.”

I locked eyes with him for a long moment, and he stared back with a bored expression. The longer I looked, the more I realized there wasn’t a hint of empathy in his demeanor. Just the same dull indifference of a man who had long since stopped caring about anything that didn’t directly benefit him.
