When Tyrone still didn’t move, Zera dropped to the ground in front of him. “Tyrone, do you really want to see me die because of your family? Please, I’m begging you! I’m terrified.” She sobbed.

Her tears finally pulled him back to his senses.

She was right. With Virginia there, Aella would be safe.

Still, to be sure, he needed to get Zera out of harm’s way first.

Tyrone helped her up. “Come on. I’ll drive you home.”

Tyrone drove Zera to the entrance of the apartment complex she was renting.

When she saw that he’d stopped at the gate and had no intention of going in, she hesitated before unbuckling her seat belt.

She gripped the door handle and turned toward him.

“Tyrone, tonight was all my fault,” she said softly. “I’ll buy Aella a new outfit another day and apologize properly.”

Tyrone was clearly distracted.

He tugged at his collar, his tone impatient. “Just throw the clothes away. I’ll explain to Aella. Don’t worry about it.”

Zera’s eyes flickered uneasily. “I can’t just ignore it. I was wrong to wear her things. Aella didn’t make things hard for me. She even spoke up for me. I should apologize.”

Before she left, she added deliberately, “Tyrone, Aella’s a good woman. Women are actually easy to please. You just have to show you care. Don’t always keep that cold face. Go home and be nice to her. She’s probably back by now. You should check on her.”

Tyrone looked at her, his expression unreadable.

Zera’s hands clenched at her sides, but she forced a smile. “You don’t have to remind me. No

matter what people say, there’s nothing between us. My conscience is clear.”

Tyrone nodded once. “Go get some rest.”

She watched his car merge onto the main road, the smile on her face twisting into something bitter.

After everything that had happened, Tyrone’s attitude was painfully clear. He would protect her, but he would never want her.

He was holding on to his marriage. Even if Aella let go first, he still refused to divorce.

And those stubborn old folks from the Winter family–they’d rather see Tyrone remarry let her through the door.

What had she done wrong?

Why did everyone look down on her?

What was she supposed to do now?
