"Alright, time's up," the guard announced.
Lillian ended the call and was escorted away. Just before leaving, she turned and flashed Rose a knowing smile.
...
Yesterday, once Allison was out of the woods, Rose finally broke the news to Joshua about Ben's poisoning. Ben was in bad shape, and with not much time left, there wasn't any sense in keeping him in the ICU. The doctors moved him to a regular room so he could spend his last days with family.
Grandma Emily had a heart attack from the shock last night and was admitted to the hospital too. Since then, Joshua had barely left Ben's side, only stepping away briefly to check on Grandma Emily.
Rose had left the prison and grabbed lunch before arriving at the hospital.
In Ben's hospital room, Rose glanced at Joshua. "Have you eaten?"
Joshua shook his head. "No appetite."
"You've got to eat, even if you don't feel like it. You're hurt too. You can't just run on empty," she insisted.
With that, Rose called Joshua's assistant, John. "Can you bring Joshua some lunch?"
"Yes, ma'am."
John had been with Joshua at the hospital since the incident with Allison and was aware of Ben's situation, so Rose didn't need to specify where to deliver the food; John already knew.
"Your grandpa's coming back to Oak Lake tomorrow afternoon," Rose mentioned to Joshua.
Joshua just nodded.
Ben was awake, looking frail and hollow-eyed, his lips a troubling shade. Rose glanced at him and sighed quietly.
The man who had argued with her just last night was now close to death. Life sure had a way of throwing curveballs.
Ben's gaze lingered on Rose for a moment before a faint, bitter smile appeared. "I'm dying. Are you happy now?"
Hearing this, Rose's composure shattered.
"Ben!" she cried, her voice breaking, "I'm not as cruel as you think!"
Ben watched Rose's reaction and stayed silent.
Seeing his parents like this, Joshua felt a deep sadness. He sighed heavily and left the room, giving them some space.
...
The police investigated the Fisher family mansion and Lillian's private villa, uncovering some suspicious items.
