Allison waved the folder in her hand. “Hey, I’m here for actual business, not whatever you’re thinking.”
Mindy rolled her eyes, unimpressed. “If this is legit, why didn’t you make an appointment? Don’t try to fool me. I’ve seen this trick a hundred times—flash a folder, act all official, try to get past the front desk. News flash, it doesn’t work anymore.”
Allison finally got it.
So plenty of women tried to see Joshua pretending it was “business.” No wonder the receptionist was so guarded—she probably dealt with this every day.
But instead of being annoyed, Allison just found the girl’s dedication kind of funny. She seemed serious about her job, and honestly, her attitude was entertaining.
Allison grinned, deciding to play along. “So my trick’s that outdated, huh?”
The receptionist shrugged. “Totally. I fell for it once. Let someone in and almost got fired. If my cousin wasn’t the CEO’s assistant, I’d be gone. They still docked half my paycheck. So trust me, you’re not getting past me today.”
Allison laughed out loud. She couldn’t help it—the girl was just too much.
She leaned in, still smiling. “Wait, your cousin’s the CEO’s assistant?”
“Yep,” Mindy replied.
Then, still trying to save Allison from herself, Mindy added, “Look, I get it. The CEO’s good-looking, and girls love him. And you’re gorgeous, but you’re just not his type. There are tons of women who dream about him, but let’s be real, neither of us have a shot.”
Allison almost burst out laughing again. Did she really just get mistaken for one of Joshua’s fangirls?
She decided to tease, “So you’re one of his dream girls too?”
Mindy didn’t even hesitate. “Yeah, but I know my limits. I’m not about to kid myself—I’m not in his league.” She gave Allison a once-over. “Honestly, you’re stunning. You could have any guy you want. Take my advice—don’t waste your time on just one. Our CEO’s already got Ms. Witt.”
Allison’s smile faded a little. “Ms. Witt?”
