At Seamar City High, Lillian dozed at her desk.
The chemistry teacher rapped her book on the table. "This isn't nap time."
Lillian blinked awake, groggy.
She had crashed hard, and Solomon hadn't nudged her.
She shot him a glare. She'd told him to wake her if the teacher got close, but he'd blown her off, probably to see her squirm.
"You're a good student," the teacher said, "but that doesn't mean you can slack. Come to my office after class. We need to talk."
The bell rang as he left.
"Not again," Lillian groaned, stuffing her bag. "Mr. Copeland has got it out for me."
"You sleep through his class," Solomon said. "Even if you hate chemistry, fake it."
"No hate," Lillian said. "His stuff is just too easy. My dad's lessons were tougher."
"Your dad is extraordinary."
"Just a regular dad to me."
Everyone knew she had the world's best parents. She was the only one clueless about it.
Farrah looked worried. "Would Mr. Copeland make you stand in the hall again?"
Lillian shrugged. "No clue. As long as he doesn't smack me, I'm good."
