As Arthur thought about Chloe’s resolute insistence on a divorce, a profound weariness washed over him. If only Chloe could be more like Jennifer–so gentle and considerate–then maybe their marriage wouldn’t have ended up like this.

His thoughts were interrupted by a soft gasp from Jennifer.

“Arthur…”

He snapped back to reality and saw Jennifer, her cheeks flushed pink, deliberately avoiding his gaze. Only then did he realize he was still in his pajamas, the collar hanging open, leaving him looking completely disheveled.

Feeling suddenly self–conscious, Arthur quickly took a step back and grabbed a jacket to throw on.

“Jennifer, could you give me a moment? I need to change.”

Jennifer gave a slight nod and turned to leave, but as she did, her legs suddenly buckled, and she stumbled forward.

“Watch out!” Arthur reacted instantly, catching her and pulling her securely into his arms before she could hit the floor.

“Ugh… I’m so sorry, Arthur,” she mumbled, leaning against his chest while holding her forehead. “I must have been kneeling in the same position for too long. I stood up too fast and got dizzy.”

“Are you okay? Here, sit down for a minute.” Arthur guided her over to the bed, helping her sit.

“I’ll be fine. Thank you for catching me–I would have taken a nasty fall otherwise.” Jennifer offered a weak smile and tried to steady herself, but her hand remained in Arthur’s. When she finally noticed, her face grew even redder.

Arthur felt the tension too. Alone in the room, hands still touching–the situation felt increasingly uncomfortable.

Just as neither knew how to break the moment, Sarah called from outside the door, “Mr. Myers, Mrs. Myers has returned.”

“Understood.” The moment Arthur heard this, he released Jennifer’s hand and quickly put distance between them.

Jennifer watched as Arthur deliberately stepped away, and she could barely conceal the flicker of frustration in her eyes.

“Arthur, Chloe is back. She must be-”

“I told you,” Arthur cut in as he finished changing, his expression cooling. “She was just letting off steam after holding it in for so long. Now that she’s gotten it out of her system, of course she’d come back.” He straightened his clothes and added coldly, “If she’s willing to humble herself and apologize, I might let it slide this time. But mark my words–there won’t be a next time.”

Chapter 17 Coming Back

With that, he strode out of the room.

Jennifer stood frozen, replaying Arthur’s words. Her expression gradually hardened.

He’s going to forgive her that easily?

Unconsciously clenching her fists, she hurried out after him.

Down in the living room, Chloe sat gracefully on the sofa, a cup of coffee–freshly made by Sarah–resting in front of her.

When Arthur entered, this was the scene that greeted him–Chloe looking completely at ease. He couldn’t help but recall how she used to constantly busy herself with household chores, always making sure everything was prepared for his return, even personally serving his juice and coffee.

But now, there was a new coolness about her, as if she were a completely different person.

Sarah noticed Arthur and greeted him respectfully, “Mr. Myers!”

Arthur gave a slight nod, then turned his gaze to Chloe. He cleared his throat pointedly, signaling his presence. Yet even after he came downstairs, Chloe didn’t so much as glance his way, treating him as if he were invisible.

She came back on her own–she must be here to apologize. But if she knew she was wrong, why acted like this?

Arthur sat down directly across from her, straightening his posture and crossing his legs, adopting an air of detached authority.

“So, you’ve finally decided to come back!”

Hearing his voice, Chloe finally looked up and met his eyes. “I’m here to talk.”

A smirk tugged at Arthur’s lips. “So you admit you were wrong?”

“Wrong?” Chloe let out a soft, derisive laugh. “Arthur, are you still half–asleep?”
