**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
**Chapter 239: The Hidden Bite**
“Get him checked—right now!” Bruce commanded, his tone urgent as he turned to Eugene, a flicker of genuine concern etched across his face. “Mr. Eugene—”
Eugene shot a quick glance at Bruce, then shifted his focus to Chloe. His voice, though soft, carried an undeniable firmness. “You can’t keep being this reckless.”
Chloe remained silent, her gaze transfixed on Eugene’s hand. The moment Bruce had taken hold of the snake, a troubling detail had caught her eye—a smear of crimson staining his pristine white sleeve. Was it from the snake? Or worse… was it his own blood?
Had the snake bitten him?
A tight knot formed in her chest, squeezing her heart with an icy grip. She instinctively moved closer, drawn by a mix of concern and fear.
“Are you okay?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, laden with worry.
Eugene locked his eyes onto hers, his expression serious as he searched her face for signs of distress. After a brief moment, a faint smile danced on his lips. “I’m fine. Were you worried about me?”
He posed the question with a sincerity that felt almost weighty, as if her response held more significance than it should have.
Chloe found herself momentarily frozen, grappling with the implications of his words. Worried? Was she truly worried?
The onlookers around them were also observing, their eyes flickering between the two of them. Now hardly seemed the right time for a confession, so she quickly averted her gaze and turned to the crew. “Let’s get back to work, everyone.”
Brian hurried over, his concern palpable as he checked on both of them. He didn’t leave until he was convinced that both Chloe and Oralia were genuinely alright.
“Listen up, everyone!” Brian announced, his voice ringing with authority. “I’ve called in a team to sweep the entire set. From this moment on, we’re implementing additional safety checks. What transpired today will not repeat itself.”
Gradually, the atmosphere on set began to calm. Oralia steadied herself, shaking off the tension as she prepared for the next scene.
“I’ve ordered some snacks—take a breather,” Brian called out cheerfully. “Let’s keep our spirits high!”
As filming resumed at a slower pace, Oralia and the male lead began running their lines, their focus returning to the task at hand.
Carolyn observed them, a cool flicker of something inscrutable flashing in her eyes before vanishing just as quickly. She plastered on a bright smile, engaging the crew in lighthearted conversation.
Watching Oralia regain her focus allowed Chloe to breathe a little easier.
“You tell me not to be reckless, Eugene, but look at you…” she remarked, her eyes still glued to Oralia, who was now deeply immersed in her role.
Eugene had remained close throughout this ordeal, chastising her for her recklessness while simultaneously leaping into danger himself.
Now, it was her turn to lecture him.
But before she could articulate her thoughts, she felt the weight of his left hand pressing down heavily on her shoulder. He leaned against her, his weight unexpected yet solid.
“Hold on to me… I’m feeling a bit unsteady,” he murmured, his voice dropping to a low tone that sent a shiver down her spine.
