Chapter 24 A New Beginning
Chloe had spoken those cutting words with such chilling indifference. When had she become so callous? Hah! Even after the divorce, she’s still playing hard to get? He refused to fall for such transparent tactics.
He would make certain she regretted this–regretted throwing everything away.
Arthur clenched the divorce papers tightly and shouted after Chloe, “Fine! Thanks for the reminder. There’s nothing left between us. I can’t believe I was actually concerned about you–worried you’d have nowhere to go after the divorce, no job, no skills to survive. That you’d be terrified of facing life alone, unable to even care for a child properly. Seems I overestimated the situation.”
The more he dwelled on it, the angrier he grew. Glancing down at the documents in his hand, in a burst of fury, he tore them in half right before Chloe’s eyes.
Jennifer gasped. “Arthur, don’t! If you ever reconsider, you’ll need the original papers! Once they’re destroyed, there’s no going back!”
But Arthur wasn’t finished. He proceeded to shred the documents into countless tiny pieces.
He glared at Chloe, his voice icy. “Reconsider? I, Arthur, would never remarry a selfish woman like you. It’s over. There’s nothing left between us now.”
“Arthur, why are you being so hard on yourself?” Jennifer reached out and gently took his arm, attempting to soothe him. Yet once her hand rested on his, she made no move to withdraw.
Arthur didn’t pull away either. He continued staring at Chloe, his eyes filled with even deeper contempt.
Chloe acted as though she hadn’t noticed their contact. She showed no reaction to Arthur destroying the divorce papers–her expression remained detached, as if she were merely an uninvolved spectator watching a performance, completely unmoved.
Frustrated by her lack of response, Arthur grew even more agitated. He remembered how Chloe used to gaze at him with pure adoration, but now–there wasn’t even a flicker of recognition in her eyes.
This wasn’t right…
Just as Arthur was about to erupt, Chloe turned gracefully and made a call. As she spun, her hair lightly brushed against his face, carrying a faint trace of her scent. For a moment, Arthur was spellbound.
When he regained his composure, he heard Chloe’s voice.
“Sweetheart, I’m finished here. You can come pick me up now.” She was actually smiling as she spoke.
“Awesome! That was so fast! I never thought you’d get divorced this quickly, Congrats on escaping that hellhole and ditching that jerk! We’re celebrating with a fancy dinner tonight!” Robert’s excited voice came clearly through the phone.
Even without the speaker on, Arthur caught every word.
Jerk!

Hellhole!
Celebrating with a fancy dinner!
H
Finished
They had just lost the support of his family, and instead of feeling any remorse, they were off to celebrate? What did he mean by “hellhole“-was his family a hellhole to them?
That little brat Robert had become completely unruly. He hadn’t disciplined him properly in too long, and now the boy was running wild with no manners whatsoever. If this continued, he’d grow up entirely out of control.
As soon as Chloe ended the call, Arthur shook off Jennifer’s hand and strode forward, attempting to grab Chloe’s arm.
“Chloe, you-”
Before he could finish, a flashy red sports car screeched to a dramatic halt at the entrance, sliding perfectly into place just steps away from Chloe.
Who drove like that in front of the Courthouse? Such a show–off!
Arthur instinctively stepped back. The car had stopped precisely where Chloe stood.
Jennifer, startled, moved closer to Arthur.
“Arthur… what’s happening?”
Arthur stared at the eye–catching sports car. It was a mid–range model, worth less than a million, but what puzzled him was its origin. The vehicle was brand new, not even registered yet.
