**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
He was well aware that he could sometimes behave like a rogue, but that was only when it came to her.
—
“Eugene, really? A grown man resorting to tricks like this? Have you no shame?” Chloe’s voice was laced with exasperation as she observed his smug expression. It was impossible for her not to voice her frustration.
A soft chuckle escaped his lips, almost teasingly. “Yeah.”
“What do you mean, ‘yeah’?” She blinked, momentarily caught off guard by his nonchalance.
“I mean yes. I’m answering your question.” His demeanor shifted, the playful glint in his eyes replaced by a weighty seriousness. “I like you. From the very first moment I laid eyes on you, I liked you. I know ‘love at first sight’ sounds ridiculous coming from me, but it’s the truth.”
Chloe stood there, utterly speechless, her mind racing to comprehend his words.
“Eugene, I mean it. I, Eugene, like you.” His gaze locked onto hers, an intensity she had never witnessed before. It was as if he was peeling back layers of his carefully constructed facade to reveal something raw and genuine.
The entire situation felt surreal to her, like a scene from a movie that she couldn’t quite grasp.
She was no naïve girl; she understood Eugene’s feelings through the subtleties of his actions. He cared for her—every moment, without fail—and his behavior had made that unmistakably clear countless times. She had even envisioned the day he would finally lay his heart bare.
But this? This was entirely unexpected.
“You were awake the entire time!” The realization hit her like a bolt of lightning.
Seeing the satisfaction on his face made her want to give him a playful shove.
“Mostly. I was only out when you were administering the medicine. That stuff was bitter enough to wake the dead. But being close to you? That made it all worthwhile.” He ran his tongue over his lips, as if savoring the memory of the taste.
“How boring.” She stood up, ready to leave, her irritation bubbling to the surface.
In an instant, his hand shot out, capturing her wrist with a firm grip. Eugene held her fast, his expression unyielding.
“All my little tricks have one singular goal.” His voice dropped to a low, earnest whisper. “To spend my life with you.”
Coming from the wealthiest man in the world, such tender words would have melted the hearts of most women.
But Chloe remained unfazed. “Since you’re feeling better, I’m leaving.” She had no interest in his cheesy lines. Where on earth had he even learned this kind of talk?
She attempted to pull her wrist free, but he tightened his grip, refusing to let go.
Annoyance surged within her. He had been awake the entire time, letting her fuss over him, and now she felt a bit played.
With a sudden yank, she pulled her hand back and turned to walk away, but a low groan from behind sent her heart racing.
