**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
**Chapter 256: The Backseat Blowup**
Monique settled into the plush leather seat of the car, a self-satisfied smirk dancing on her lips. She turned her gaze toward the rearview mirror, seeking out Scott, who lingered outside, his posture tense and his expression stormy. He was engaged in a hushed conversation with his assistant and lawyer, their body language indicating a serious discussion.
An unsettling feeling crept over her.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Scott climbed into the car, his demeanor as heavy as the ominous clouds overhead. “Drive,” he barked at the driver, his voice gravelly and devoid of warmth.
Monique sensed the oppressive weight of the atmosphere surrounding them. Shouldn’t this be a moment of celebration? Carolyn had just been released, yet Scott’s face was etched with worry and disappointment, as if he had just lost everything he held dear.
“Scott, what’s going on?” she inquired softly, her voice barely above a whisper, laced with concern.
He remained silent, his fingers gripping the documents in his hand so tightly that the papers began to crumple under the pressure.
Monique’s eyes narrowed, fixated on the papers that seemed to hold the key to his distress. A sense of unease washed over her as she reached over and snatched the documents from him, her heart racing.
“What’s this?” Her smile evaporated as she scanned the contents. A storm brewed within her, and before she could contain it, she erupted.
“Thirty percent? You actually gave Chloe thirty percent of the shares? Scott, have you lost your mind? How could you do this? What about me? What about Carolyn?” She hurled the papers back at him, her anger spilling over.
Scott picked them up with a heavy heart, his expression darkening further, the shadows deepening on his face until it was nearly unrecognizable.
“Thirty percent! You treat her like royalty? Just hand it over as if it’s nothing? By doing this, she becomes the largest shareholder. From now on, she’ll have the final say in the boardroom. What does that make us? Carolyn and I have stood by you through thick and thin, and you only offer us a measly ten percent?” She gripped his arm, shaking him vehemently, desperation creeping into her voice.
“How could you do this? You didn’t even want to give us that ten percent in the beginning! I had to plead for weeks before you finally relented! But for Chloe, you just hand over thirty percent without a second thought? What were you thinking?” Monique’s voice cracked, the frustration and hurt spilling out as she clawed at him, half-yelling, half-sobbing.
The driver, sensing the rising tension, glanced nervously into the rearview mirror but quickly averted his gaze, focusing intently on the road ahead, his silence a testament to the chaos unfolding in the backseat.
Scott’s expression remained grim, but the moment Monique began to tear at his clothing, her sobs echoing in the confined space, something within him snapped. This was a recurring cycle. Every time they fought, she wielded her tears like a weapon against him. He was done—more than done!
