**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
“Who on earth suggested I should get married?” Arthur felt a surge of frustration bubbling to the surface. He had reached his limit. “Mom, you can’t just dictate my life like this.”
Madilyn stood firm, her resolve unyielding. “What do you mean by that? Everyone’s aware of your relationship with Jennifer. Do you honestly believe she can remain in the shadows indefinitely?” Her gaze flicked to the staircase, where Jennifer and Jenarth were making their way down. Raising her voice slightly, she ensured they would hear her words. “Aren’t you going to step up? Jennifer has raised Jenarth all on her own. I can see the way she looks at you. You both have the freedom to be together, and you’ve already crossed that line. It’s only right that you marry her. I’ve already welcomed her into this family.”
Arthur stood frozen, the weight of her words leaving him utterly speechless.
At that moment, the sound of servants bustling about broke the tension. Arthur’s attention was drawn to a group carrying furniture down from the upper floors. His heart sank as he noticed them disassembling the bed from the master bedroom.
That bed had been Chloe’s sanctuary after their wedding. Back then, he had spent most of his days at the office, only returning home sporadically. But now, witnessing the dismantling of that sacred space struck him with a profound sense of loss. Chloe was truly gone, and these remnants were all that remained of her.
“Stop! Leave that alone. It belongs to me,” he snapped, taking a step forward, his voice laced with urgency. “Who gave you permission to take it apart?”
“Hold it right there.” Madilyn’s voice sliced through the air, halting him in his tracks.
“You must have seen the headlines. Your wedding to Jennifer is on the horizon. We need to get ready. Everything in the Myers Manor is being updated. I had the master bedroom cleared out. Everything will be brand new,” she continued, her tone dripping with disdain. “Stop indulging in those foolish thoughts of yours. Don’t make me look bad. You’re a Myers; act like it. Prepare properly for the wedding.”
Arthur felt a chilling numbness wash over him.
“Get rid of all that old junk. Clean the room and set up the new furniture. Ask Mrs. Myers where everything should go,” Madilyn instructed, gesturing toward Jennifer, who was now standing on the stairs.
“Mom, even if you insist on me marrying Jennifer, why drag Chloe into this? Everyone is calling her the other woman. You know she was my wife—”
“Enough, Arthur. Stop looking so lovesick. It’s repulsive,” Madilyn interrupted, her voice dripping with contempt. “How did I end up with such a pathetic son?”
His heart sank at her words.
“When have I ever mentioned Chloe’s name?” Madilyn shot back, her impatience evident. “I don’t have time for discussions about a woman like that. Those are just rumors circulating on the internet.”
Arthur was left speechless, grappling with the chaos of emotions swirling inside him.
