Arthur snapped back to reality. He looked up at Jennifer and saw the impatience in her eyes. “What is it, Jennifer?” he asked quietly.

Jennifer was annoyed. This wasn’t the first time he’d zoned out while she was talking. Lately, his mind was always somewhere else—and it was starting to wear on her.

“Arthur,” she said, trying hard to keep her voice calm. “Which of these two wedding dresses do you like better? I’ll go with whichever you choose. Madilyn said it has to be perfect–this is a big deal.”

She’d brought up his mother’s name again. Just like that, Arthur’s face grew more serious. He glanced quickly at the two dresses and gave a short reply.

“Keep them both, if you like.”

He stood up. “Jennifer, stay here with Jenarth. I just remembered there’s something at the office I need to take care of.” And with that, he hurried out. By the time he reached the door, he was already on the phone.

When Jennifer heard him say to keep both dresses, she didn’t feel happy at all. All she felt was his distance- how careless he seemed.

That wasn’t what she wanted. Not even close.

“Mommy!”

Hearing the voice, Jennifer looked down at Jenarth. Her eyes darkened as she noticed the carefully selected cake still sitting there.

Arthur had seen the cake and rushed off. It was already evening–what kind of company emergency could there be at this hour? Even if something important came up, plenty of people could handle it. Did it really require his presence? He was clearly making excuses to leave.

What was he avoiding?

Where was he going?

Was he going to see that bitch, Chloe?

The thought made Jennifer’s composure crack. She wanted to explode right then and there.

“Take all this away and put it somewhere,” she ordered the servants coolly. In this household, the staff took their cues from Arthur and Madilyn. It was time they understood–she was the lady of this house now.

They needed to learn who was really in charge.

Chloe was having dinner at a restaurant with Robert and Oralia.

Oralia had been filming nonstop, then got hit with all the bad press, and she was still fuming. She practically wished she could march up to Arthur and give that disgusting man a piece of her mind–or maybe a slap.

“Chloe, how can Arthur be so shameless? I’ve never met a guy like him. Besides being kinda good–looking, what else does he even have going for him?” Oralia stuffed a large shrimp into her mouth as if she were biting into Arthur himself, ready to grind him to pieces.

“And it’s not like he’s that handsome anyway. Looks–wise, Arthur doesn’t even come close to Landon.” Oralia counted on her fingers. “Landon has the face–if only his mouth wasn’t so sharp–but he’s still miles better than Arthur. And the most eye–catching one is definitely Eugene.”

At the mention of Eugene, Chloe’s eyebrows lifted slightly.

“Eugene’s first–class in both body and looks. If he ever became an actor, I’d fight to be in a scene with him. Now that’s a man with real presence.” Oralia leaned in. “Chloe, if you’re going to choose someone, choose a man like that. Just standing next to him would be a pleasure. Arthur… he only drags you down.”

Robert, sitting beside them, ate his food and nodded vigorously. Right now, Oralia was saying everything he wanted to say–it was perfect.

“Chloe, you’re single now and free to mingle. Don’t waste it. You used to be hung up on Arthur, but why limit yourself when you could-”

“Chloe.”

“Wait, am I hearing things? Speak of the devil… I swear I just heard Arthur’s voice.” Oralia frowned at Chloe.
