He Cheated I Rose: Making Him Regret Everything (Chloe and Arthur) novel Chapter 288

**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**

**Chapter 288: The First Question He Asked**

“Does it even matter?” Jennifer’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and frigid, as if it were a blade slicing through the fabric of the air. “His heart was never mine to begin with. Why would he care about my past? That man is nothing but garbage from another life. He won’t dare to speak to me like that again.”

Madilyn felt a wave of dread wash over her, an icy chill creeping up her spine as the weight of Jennifer’s words settled in. She understood the implications all too well, and it sent a shiver coursing through her veins.

“I don’t care about the gossip,” Jennifer continued, her tone hardening like steel. “Your sole responsibility is to ensure that Arthur marries me.”

Madilyn stood there, momentarily rendered speechless, grappling with the heavy burden of Jennifer’s demands. The air between them felt thick with tension, a tangible reminder of the power dynamics at play.

“Don’t think I don’t see how you feel about me, Madilyn. I can see you plotting against me,” Jennifer sneered, a cruel smile curling at the corners of her lips. “But remember this—if I fall, you’re going down with me.” Her laughter rang out, sharp and merciless, echoing off the sterile walls. “We are bound together, you and I. My survival means yours. My destruction will be yours too.”

Madilyn felt the weight of those words sink into her like heavy stones, each one laden with a meaning she couldn’t ignore. She loathed everything Jennifer represented, yet here she found herself, ensnared with no escape in sight.

Just you wait, Jennifer. Your day of reckoning is coming.

As Madilyn opened her mouth to retort, she caught sight of medical staff rushing down the corridor, their white coats billowing behind them like a swarm of bees.

“Hurry! Mr. Charles Myers has woken up! Go get Dr. Palma right away!”

“Hurry up! Get ready for the check-up!”

Madilyn’s heart raced at the news. The moment she heard that Charles was waking, her phone slipped from her fingers, forgotten in the urgency of the moment.

Charles was awake?

After all this time?

Could this “Dr. Palma” truly perform miracles?

Every other specialist had given up on Charles, deeming him beyond hope. Yet now…

This has to be some kind of joke! Madilyn thought bitterly, shaking her head at her own disbelief. She pushed through the doorway, her steely demeanor instantly replaced by a mask of concern.

“Arthur!” she called out, her voice laced with feigned worry, the urgency of the situation sharpening her tone.

On the bed, Charles had managed to open his eyes, though they remained hazy and unfocused. He stared at the ceiling as if searching for a way back to the world he had almost left behind.

Arthur stepped forward, taking his grandfather’s hand with a gentle grip, his heart pounding in his chest. “Grandpa! You’re awake!” he exclaimed, his voice thick with emotion, a mix of joy and disbelief flooding through him.

Charles’s gaze shifted slowly, the fog in his eyes beginning to clear as he turned toward the sound of Arthur’s voice. After what felt like an eternity, he rasped, “Arthur…”

His voice was rough, barely more than a whisper, but it was enough to flood Arthur’s heart with relief.
