**Chapter 339: Shifting Alliances**
“Ernesto?”
Monique’s voice echoed softly through the room, but the silence that followed was deafening. She called his name again, her frustration mounting like a storm cloud. With each passing moment, her patience thinned, and she raised her voice, scanning the room for any sign of him.
Ernesto sat rigidly on the sofa, his demeanor cold and distant. He was ensnared in a web of his own thoughts, utterly detached from the world around him. It was as if he had slipped into another realm, oblivious to Monique’s attempts to reach him.
“Ernesto, are you even listening to me?” she shouted, her anger igniting like a spark in dry brush. He lifted his gaze, but his eyes were vacant, as though his mind was wandering far beyond her reach.
Monique felt a rush of fury. This wasn’t the Ernesto she knew. The man she had once shared laughter and dreams with had been replaced by someone unrecognizable.
“What’s all this yelling about? Do you even comprehend anything? Is it just in a woman’s nature to scream and complain?” Ernesto’s voice was sharp, and he glared at her with a look that cut deeper than she had anticipated.
Monique froze, taken aback by his sudden outburst. The shock of his words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.
Had he truly snapped at her? The disgust that flickered in his eyes felt like a dagger.
Did Ernesto now harbor feelings of contempt towards her? Had their bond soured into something bitter and unrecognizable?
“Ernesto, you…” She stood there, momentarily stunned, her mind racing to process his hostility.
Noticing the disbelief in her voice, Ernesto frowned, a flicker of regret passing over his features. Realizing he had crossed a line, he softened his tone, attempting to bridge the chasm that had suddenly opened between them. “Monique, can’t you see? What Chloe is doing right now might actually play into our hands!”
Monique blinked at him, confusion clouding her thoughts. “What are you talking about?”
He met her gaze with a seriousness that demanded her attention. “Look at it from a different perspective.”
“What?” she replied, her impatience bubbling beneath the surface.
“Chloe has become quite the player. She signed a cooperation agreement with that billionaire. Cosmos Group has injected fifty billion into Lewis Group. Fifty billion! That’s not pocket change. Even if we sold off Lewis Group entirely, we wouldn’t come close to that amount.”
“Stop dancing around the issue. Just get to the point!” Monique snapped, her earlier frustration resurfacing.
