**Chapter 356: A Rescue and a Resolve**
With the combined strength of several bodyguards, Zachary was swiftly extricated from the twisted wreckage that had once been a car. Pain radiated from his leg, rendering him unable to stand on his own. The world around him felt distant, muffled by the throbbing in his body.
“Zachary, you’re still bleeding!” Chloe exclaimed, her voice laced with panic as she surveyed the extent of his injuries. The sight of blood soaking through his clothes sent a shiver of dread through her.
“I’ll live. Don’t worry about me, Chloe,” Zachary replied, though the pallor of his face betrayed him. He exhaled sharply, struggling to suppress the pain. “Looks like someone really didn’t want you at that banquet.” A weak smile flickered across his lips, one that barely reached his eyes. “If even fate couldn’t take you down tonight, you’d better go there and own the room.”
Eugene stepped forward, his expression serious as he gently wiped the blood from Chloe’s cheek with a handkerchief. Her scratches were minor, a mere afterthought compared to the wounds Zachary had suffered.
Chloe’s expression hardened at Zachary’s words, her voice taking on a steely resolve. “Whoever did this… they’re going to regret showing up tonight.” The anger simmering within her was palpable, igniting a fire in her chest.
“I don’t think I can make it,” Zachary murmured weakly, his energy waning. “But I’ll be rooting for you. Go win this—” He broke off abruptly, a harsh cough escaping him, and then his body went limp, collapsing into the arms of the bodyguard who was holding him.
“Zachary!” Chloe shouted, instinctively moving toward him, but Melinda was quicker. Almost as soon as he lost consciousness, she dashed over, taking him from the bodyguard with a frantic urgency that was unlike her usual calm demeanor.
“Zachary! Hey—look at me! You have to be okay! I never asked you to save me, damn it. Don’t you dare die on me. If you’re gone, I’ll owe you forever, you hear me?” Melinda’s voice trembled as she shook him gently, tears pooling in her eyes. The fear and guilt etched on her face were unmistakable, shattering her typically composed exterior.
“Zachary, please—wake up!” Her voice grew sharper, tinged with desperation, almost reaching a scream.
She continued to shake him, her composure slipping away as she fought against the rising tide of panic.
“He’s unconscious,” Chloe said firmly, stepping forward to pull Melinda back to reality. “We need to focus.”
Melinda blinked, her eyes finally registering Chloe’s presence. She took a shaky breath, trying to regain her balance amid the chaos.
“Chloe, he saved me. Even when he was hurt, he shielded me. If he doesn’t make it, I… I won’t be able to…” Her words stumbled over each other as she fumbled for her phone, her heart racing. “I need to call my grandfather. He’ll know what to do—”
But her phone was nowhere to be found, lost in the whirlwind of the crash.
“Take a breath. We’re getting him to the hospital now,” Chloe said with determination, her gaze fixated on the blood still seeping from Zachary’s wounds. An icy anger simmered within her, growing colder and deeper with each passing moment.
Zachary had been their protector in that car when it mattered the most. Without him, the situation would have spiraled into something far worse.
