The hospital felt more like a luxury hotel. With her injuries, Chloe really didn’t feel like being seen in public. Honestly, she just wanted to hide away for a while.
Staying put for a few days seemed like the best plan. She could rest up and leave once Eugene sorted out the remaining issues. No need to hurry.
Eugene gave a soft nod. “Alright, I’ll wrap things up quickly. Ms. Lewis, if you need anything at all while you’re here, just say the word.”
“Okay,” Chloe said quietly.
Just then, Robert returned with a glass of water–perfect timing. Eugene stood up. “I’ll let you two be. I’ve got things to handle, so I’ll take off. I’ll stop by again later.”
Thanks for your help,” Chloe replied simply.
Eugene smiled and turned to go. As he passed Robert, he gently ruffled the boy’s hair.
Robert stood still, watching him leave. Only after the door closed did he hurry back to the bed and hand Chloe the water.
“Mommy, that handsome man seems really nice. Should we check him out?” Robert didn’t usually like anyone but his mom touching him, but this time, he hadn’t minded at all.
“Why would we check him out?” Chloe took a small sip.
“To see if he’s good enough to be your next husband! If this hot guy has more money than Arthur, it’s a total knockout. His looks alone crush Arthur, no comparison at all. But most importantly–is he single? If yes, he’s totally the one!”
“Pfft-” Chloe choked on her water. She wiped her chin and glared. “You little troublemaker! One more word and you’re in trouble!”
“Mommy, don’t get mad. Anger gives you wrinkles!”
“Robert Myers! Are you trying to test my limits?”
“Mommy, I told you–I want to be called Robert Lewis now.”

Upstairs, in the hospital’s top–floor meeting room, a large screen showed the men who had started the attack—now on their knees, begging. Betraying the boss was a line they shouldn’t cross. Eugene always said guys like that weren’t worth a bullet.
To any normal person, the scene was hard to watch. As for the guys who messed up… they probably never wanted to go through it again and there wouldn’t even be a “next time” to begin with.
“Word’s out. This should make anyone else think twice before causing trouble. You’ll have some quiet for a
while.”
Chapter 44 A Quiet Stay
The screen went dark. The man in the video was silent now.
Eugene didn’t speak. He leaned back into the sofa, lit a cigarette, but didn’t take a puff.
Landon frowned. “Everything’s handled. Why do you look so… blank?”
Still, Eugene didn’t answer. He just knit his brow slightly.
Finishelf
“Seriously?” Landon moved closer, confused. “What’s that look for? We cleaned it up fast and clean. You’re not happy? Wasn’t it fast enough?”
“If it took longer, I could’ve stayed with her a bit more,” Eugene muttered.
Landon stared, totally lost. “What? What’s wrong? What’s going on with him?”
He studied Eugene’s unusual expression. He’d known him for years, but that soft smile? That was as new and rare as flowers in the desert.
“Eugene, what’s with you-”
