Just like… A frightened tortoise that had shrunk into its shell.
Marie still hadn't figured out what had just happened to Alex. Meanwhile, Elowen smiled with satisfaction and then gestured to Marshmallow by her side.
"Bring that tortoise over."
Marshmallow, usually spoiled and playful with Shannon, was now extremely obedient and didn't even dare to show its usual charm.
It immediately followed Elowen's command and grabbed the tortoise, which was nervously stretching its neck and looking terrified, before delivering it to her.
Not wanting to touch the fox's saliva, Elowen tilted her chin slightly and indicated for it to be passed on. "Let the youngling take care of it."
It was only natural for a mother to look after her son.
Marshmallow immediately complied, gently nudging the tortoise from its mouth into Marie's palm. Its tail wagged energetically as it happily trotted back to Elowen's side.
Marie, still focused on her Alex, who had suddenly crouched on the ground holding his head, was confused by the tortoise that had unexpectedly been placed into her hand.
She didn't even think to chase after Marshmallow, which had abandoned her for Shannon.
Marie continued to fuss over "Alex" on the ground, asking urgently, "Alex, what's going on with you? Did she do something to you? Don't be scared—just get up, and we'll go to Adam."
"Alex", holding his head and pretending to be dead on the ground, didn't respond. Instead, the tortoise in Marie's palm opened its mouth wide and shouted in sheer panic, "Mom, over here! It's me!
"Shannon, that crooked sorcerer, swapped my soul with the tortoise's! Mom, you've got to find someone to switch us back!"
Unfortunately, no matter how loudly it cried out, Marie couldn't hear the tortoise.
These days, when Albany spoke, even ordinary humans could hear him. And as for the fact that Shannon's pet alligator snapping turtle could talk? The Jensen family had long since stopped finding that odd.
Take Marie, for instance. She wasn't surprised to hear Albany talking; what stunned her was what it said.
A spirit? Inside the tortoise on her palm? Didn't they say their villa was protected by Shannon's barrier, which could ward off evil?
Though her mind was racing with questions, Marie's body reacted on instinct. Her hand jerked, and she flung the tortoise away with a startled yelp.
Alex was sent sailing through the air and, once again, hit the grass. The sturdy shell spared him any real injury, but that didn't stop him from letting out a dramatic, spiraling wail in his heart.
"Mom, it's me!"
